a former md/phd classmate completed a residency in neurology at MGH this june where was awarded a K08. person is a show-room new(ly) appointed instructor at the major academic medical institue in Chicago (southside) with research (mostly), teaching (med students), and clinical (4 hr/week) responsibilites. salaray less than $76K. our PA's make more...whats the point....

Were they made just an "Instructor"? At UVA, an Instructor is a non-tenure track person who is considered above a fellow but below a real attending, so they are paid accordingly. At least here, people who take these positions seem to be positioning for a real faculty spot or are killing a year waiting for a significant other to finish up.

Let's face it. If you are going to do academics, you have to do because you love it.
 
Never do research only, if you're in it for the money, unless you feel confident that you're a few years away from a Nobel. An Assistant Prof (w/o clinical responsibilities) would clear less than half of an attending.
