How much time do they spend making a decision on a student? Do they read the files on students prior to the meeting and just present their opinion? Or how does it work?

If a student is recommended by the interviewer and has a good numerical stats, what reason could they have to reject that student. Do they actually talk about "he probably won't go here why bother sending him an acceptance?" Or "look at this picture he submitted, he needs some major rhinoplasty?"

Any of you students on commitees care to share how professional the committees are? I should hope they are as sterile as an OR.

all of the photos of the applicants up for review at a certain meeting of the committee are taped to the wall and the committee members are all given a handful of darts to throw. if you are lucky enough to have a dart hit your picture, an acceptance letter is sent your way!

Usually by the time the applicants' files make it to the ExCom level, there is still harsh competition for limited seats. At this point, the committees tend to use any negatives on your application as possible disqualifiers that would allow an equally impressive applicant to surpass you. So, that C you got in Organic Chemistry 3 years ago that you thought was no longer a problem since you retook it to get an A, suddenly is raised as a reason why applicant X should be accepted over you. It's sad, but often true. In this light, complete academic redemption is never possible. A bad grade could always play a part in their decision given two similar applicants.
