I know a lot of people had to answer to adcomms about their sometimes poor grades, or even a semester of stupidity... but has anybody had extreme circumstances, such as being expelled from school and reinstated back.. who got other than a negative nod from adcomms? Anybody got kicked out once, but was able to go back up and still get accepted to med school?

It depends... were you expelled for bad grades (ie academic suspension) or did you beat up your RA (repeatedly)??

I have a friend who had to explain a pot incident and I think a teacher gave him a negative letter of recommendation.
He had a 3.8 science gpa, a published genetics paper, 37 MCAT (15V), went to africa to help children w/ HIV...

he got into one local university from his homestate... flat out denied everywhere else.

Lack of morality/ethics will definitely get you thrown out of the game.

No.. got expelled for academic... you know.. years of REAL stupidity.. now paying a price... got accepted back to ASU, currently a junior getting ready to take MCAT in April... GPA 3.3 (thank god) and growing... but was thinking about even going for masters first in order to show that I've changed... but still don't know if that would be sufficient enough...

my advisor's brother got kicked out of northwestern b/c of grades, took some time off, went back to school elsewhere and went to stanford md/phd.

I have a friend whose fresheman year undergrad was a complete blowout and then came back after a year and brought it up to 3.6. The adcomms actually loved that he picked himself up and was accepted with a 26 mcat. It was his "hook" so to speak.

I am currently applying for medical school and I had a shaky academic background to overcome as well. I was a unmature computer science major before I realize that I loved medicine. I held near 100 credits of 2.1 GPA. Yeah....it was not nice. I realized that I needed to shape up and get myself back on track. That was in 1997 and I transferred to another school and changed my major to molecular biology. There I aced my organics, biochems, molecular genetics, physics, and virology type courses and ended up with a 3.6 GPA at that school. I also have a 4.0 post bacc and a current 4.0 in my MPH degree which I will finish before I enter medicial school. I worked my tail off to change my habits and dedicate myself to medicine. I went to meet adcomms at schools to talk about applying there. Every one of them was impressed with the the academic rebound and were very encouraging in applying. I definatly feel that I am behind the eightball while applying to schools but I know I have done the work and will accomplish my dream. Check out the mdapplicants.com to see some stats of people that have gotten into medical school.

Thanks a lot for your input guys! Finally starting to feel a bit of a wind in my sails of hope.. hehehe 🙂 As I understood most of you had to change undergrad schools in order to go back up... was that just a mental thing... or changing schools actually gives you some kind of an advantage?

Hi guys,

Don't worry Cozak, I'm sure you can recover from it just fine! Medical schools look for an upward trend in your grades, so I wouldn't concern myself with it too much. Just keep going!

Hi Cozak,

And one more thing, if it makes you feel better. I was talking to one of the doctors at a medical school near me, who was talking about "screw-ups" in the interview. Can you imagine how the person who said this felt?

Interviewing Phyisican: So, have you thought about what kind of speciality you wanted to enter after you finish medical school?

Student: Yeah, I thought about surgery.

Physician: Oh? Any reason you chose that?

Student: Yeah, because I wouldn't wanna do that fluff-stuff like psychiatry. Who would want to do that anyways? The only real solution to a problem is cold, hard steel...

Physican: --twitch-- I AM a psychiatrist..............
