I am an HPSP scholarship recipient. I am approx. 1 yr. from graduating from a civilian ER Residency. What is the process that determines where we are placed after residency??

Starting in Oct, you need to be talking with your detailer. From there you will find out what is available and negotiate.

Can you please be more specific? Can anybody recount specific experiences? Does the detailer ask you to list your top three choices? How much are your preferences taken into account? What is your likelihood that your first assignment will be oversees?

I would recommend you talk with the Emergency Medicine specialty leader this fall before you talk to the detailer.

Its much more of a conversation and negotiation. You tell him what areas you would like to consider, he tells you if he has anything. If there are any "hot fills" (spots that have to be filled) those will be discussed. You probably won't be offered any of the really good spots, or spots in teaching programs. Those will be saved for people who have the option of getting out and are trying to be enticed to stay. If you wait a little bit, they may become open, but you run the risk of getting the absolute crumbs. Definately a cost/reward issue.
