What I'm asking is, say I'm interested as choice #2 in specialty "x". Clearly I have no strong background in other specialties, so how would that make me or anyone else who does not match a qualified/attractive candidate for other specialties?

well, you wouldn't be an attractive candidate for heme-onc if you didn't have a lot of projects/research in heme-onc. basically, you're in your first year...i'd get an elective in heme-onc and/or get some research going asap and then you'll have something to talk about when you apply next year. or, you could hook up w/ someone doing melanoma work, and maybe parlay that into something that can be used for both heme-onc and derm....
anyway, i think your same question was already well-answered in another forum:
