What happens if you back out of a residency?

What would happen if, say, you matched to a residency for AEGD and then your circumstances changed drastically and you ended up not wanting to go to said residency?

Nothing would happen, they might be able to fill the spot with another resident. They aren't going to lose much sleep if you decide not to go to their program

I thought MATCH is a binding agreement. Isn’t it illegal to back out? Potentially pay a fine?

They usually wait-list a few people. If you give them ample notice before the start of the program they should be able to fill the position. Exactly how I got in my residency, someone backed out and I was informed 6 weeks before the start of my program.

Not sure about the wait list thing, but there is almost always someone out there to fill a vacant spot.
