Hi everyone,

I hope everyone is enjoying wrapping up the interview season. Now looking to the future, when we all get to be attendings, I was interested in hearing what happens when a doctor gets sued-- how does the process work from subpoena to trial and settlement. All thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

something tells me you have too much time on your hands at this point. i'd suggest resurrecting the CRNA v. MDA debate again if you really would like to see some interesting thoughts.

When u get sued, you hire an attorney. If you screwed up, you sweat a lot and have nightmares and go to confession. If it is a crap claim, you do the above but less severely!

it's good to think about this ahead of time. We had a lawyer/anesthesiologist give a talk a few months ago and it was incredibl helpful. Perhaps your group can bring in a lawyer to do a teaching session on the process. Main thing now is to perfect your documentation.

Thanks for the replies, but I am more interested in hearing what going through this process is like from an attending's perspective-- I have heard that it can be quite harrowing and would like to hear if that is so. Thanks.

It's only "harrowing" if you let it be... if you're smart, you'll let them do your job while you do yours. Kind of think of it like this, how would you want them to react/interact as you're doing a peripheral nerve block on them? You wouldn't. You're the expert, they're not. No matter how much they want to help,you want them to stay out of it. Now the role's reversed.
