What have you given up for dentistry??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My dog. My b.f. of 2 years who refused to try long distance. Leaving sunny california for the mighty midwest for 4 years....hey how much colder can it be??? 😉Last summer was spent studying for the DAT....and of course all the money for applying/going to interviews/etc. but ITS GOING TO BE WORTH IT WHEN I BUST OPEN MY PRACTICE!!!! WORDDDDDDDDD.

Same here...I just quit my job from a pharma company and i might have to sell my car..i missed my fat paycheck but i m more proud of going to a dental school 🙂
Eldirty, I feel you. I left mine in the pharma industry (60k/year), and my dream car, to come back with the same intentions (doing my masters to improve ug record). I'm not in yet. Hopefully next year at this time I'll feel better about my decision.

Having steady sex with sororstitutes at my large state school.

A normal social life -- which really isn't a loss for me anyway. Other than that, possibly the girl of my dreams because she's likely going to go into medicine (general surgery), which I will probably end up doing too because I don't want to lose her to someone else -- once in a life time chance really. But who knows, maybe I'll still be able to convince her to go into surgery through dentistry since we both want to do surgery eventually. Just really worried because I know there are way better looking guys out there, and smarter ones at that, for someone as both attractive and bright as she is.

you worry too much. if it happens it happens.

And why is that? I don't understand what you mean by "take crap from"
There are some douche bag officers, but most respect all of the enlisted people too...

I've never heard anyone say they'd rather be enlisted, but to each their own, I guess. 🙂

As a matter of fact, I do understand the rank structure in the military. Sure, all enlisted have to take crap from even an O-1 but still, I'd much rather be a gunnery sgt or first sgt than a liutenant or captain.

I like this post...I think pre-dent life is pretty darn tough, and I've given up a lot of my free time studying for the DAT and trying to maintain a good GPA!

Jesus, pre health students are melodramatic. Being pre-dent (or pre-med for that matter) is not mutually exclusive with a social life, nor is it some "enormous hardship/sacrifice". I'd say the pre-health loads at my university require much less time invested than some of the more demanding business or engineering majors, and you don't see them complaining.

I gave up being debt-free before I turn 40. Also, having kids (as least biological anyways).

Agreed. Being pre-dent is not that hard. I get through classes. I have time for ECs. And I still have most thursday-sunday nights to keep to myself, hang out with friends, or spend time with the gf. It's not as bad as most make it out to be. Time management, people. Youre not even in dental school yet.

Being able to impress people by saying "Oh, I'm a premed", though that isn't really much of a loss to me.

Now they remark on how gross people's teeth are.

I feel as though most of us have given up something in our life to get at this point in our life. What is it for??

I gave up my old band, playing music, hunting, and countless hours with friends and family.

How about you??

My soul

I didn't really give up much except possible other careers, but that's hardly anything. I still had a frickin' ball in undergrad, partying, midnight shenanigans, little bit of studying, meeting ladies, etc, etc, etc.

What I probably 'gave up' to study for the DAT was hours of watching ESPN because I studyed in the afternoons, and gave myself the nights off.

I gave up using the right hemisphere of my brain. Histology was almost like an art class for me! Other than that, social life and free time (which includes time to do dishes, laundry, cleaning, etc. -- basically, anything other than studying).

I like this. I too, gave up the right hemisphere of my brain. I used to be artistic and philosophical, well versed, well read. Now I am a memorizing drone. I can recite all the products of glycolysis and TCA, I can name all the hormones produced by the anterior pituitary, draw out 2984729384729384 organic chem reactions and know every single gen chem formula one could know. I can not, however, discuss art, politics and the nature of human culture like I once could. Basically I gave up being a fun and interesting human being.

This comment makes me feel less guilty about all the time I waste reading politics and philosophy (and sports!) when I should be studying for science classes or the DAT.

I've given up a normal social life. I still go out and make time for myself, but I've had to cut back. I'm not as close to my friends as they are with each other since I can't go out with them all the time.

I've given up my family life. I go to school far away from home, but I started school thinking I'd have plenty of time to see my family over breaks. But now I rarely go home because I spend spring breaks on volunteering trips and summer breaks on campus taking classes or something. This one really hurts the most.

You may be surprised to learn that not all schools are the same. For example, at my school, science/pre-health and engineering are comparable, and business is easier than both. Pre-health may not be anything out of the ordinary at your school, but it may be at others.

I agree that, regardless of what you study in college, the sacrifices are relatively small considering what so many other people go through.

i think you're interesting 😉

I gave up a pilot slot in the Air National Guard. I'm still not convinced it was the "right" thing to do, but the situation called for it. I'm pretty stoked to make the career change though, I think it will be awesome in the end.

I just can't look at the sexy f-16's whenever they fly over my house!
