In a postbac, a student really has to work hard to prove that he/she is capable of handling medical school.

But what if someone catches mono in the middle of it?

Is it still possible to study effectively or do well on a test while being exhausted with a horrible sore throat that lasts for weeks? Is it possible to get treatments so that life is at least bearable?

I am not the kind of person who shares saliva, but I think mono can affect just about anyone.

Do you currently have mono?
No.

But to add to your question: What if you caught meningitis? Tetanus? Botulism? An STD? God forbid, got hit by a bus?
These things you listed are either extremely rare or much more preventable than mono.

I'm sorry, but life throws all sorts of crap at you. Just deal with it when it happens (if it's not preventable) and don't add any extra, unnecessary worries trying to anticipate things that no one can predict.
Makes sense.

If you get Mono, your career will probably be over. You might as well forget about med school let alone a post-bacc. Plus your family and friends will probably hate you and you will be a social pariah.

Really the only worse thing you can possibly get is probably AIDS.

Hope that helps 🙂

It's true. I've seen someone get excommunicated from their family as a result of contracting Mono.

I got mono a couple years ago and functioned as a normal human being for the entirety of my illness despite sleeping four times more than usual, a diffuse rash, killer fevers, and coughing up both lungs. Maintained all A's and graduated. Maybe I'm just lucky?

Actually, I think the Bubonic Plague might be worse. And it struck (albeit very briefly) in NYC a couple of years ago...or so NOVA tells me.
Bubonic plague has human cases in New Mexico & Libya, just in the last month.

What if the rapture happens? Do your sinning heirs get a tuition refund?

Yep, the cases in NYC involved tourists from New Mexico who caught it from the fleas that were living on wood rats around their home.

The rapture already happened over a week ago! No worries there.
The rapture got rescheduled for October. Of course.

If the point of this thread is to understand whether you're screwed in your SMP (or in med school) if you have something bad happen, like mono, what happens is that the school does what it can for you. That could mean you get to take an exam late, or you get to take a leave of absence, or you get some special consideration where you can do a project in the summer to make up for a chunk of missed time. Generally when people get divorced/pregnant/bereaved/deathly ill, most schools aren't particularly dickish about it. When badness happens, you can lose a year, sure, but that's the least of your worries, really.

Best of luck to you.
