I submitted my primary early this week... I only applied to one school. What would they do if I had my references mail their reference letters right now? My gut instinct says that they will think "WTF" and throw my stuff away. I just want to give my references plenty of time to mail this stuff and if I wait to get the secondary invite to have them sent it might be another 2 weeks before they get them...

so .. What if?

I know this school sends an auto secondary

What school is it?

you should really wait until you receive the secondaries. I actually gave my LOR writers a pre-packaged envelope with a priority mail stamp included and addressed to the school. I felt that was the least I could do to make the situation as pain free as possible. However, I would definitely wait until the secondary, error on the side of caution rather than the other way around. Good luck

It sounds like you had an outstanding plan. 1 school very late in the cycle. What kind of response were you hoping for here? -- "Go for it?" If so, here you go -- Go for it!

I'm not answering your question but addressing a seperate part of your message... I just wanted to suggest applying to more than one school, I'm not sure if you have been told this by a pre-med advisor or not... Unless your stats are outstanding, or you applied to several MD programs and only one DO program, you should really consider applying to more schools. Just a thought!

yea, applied to several MD... Only interested in one DO school

You need to wait until the school has received/processed your primary...if not then it will definately be "WTF"?

I can hardly believe that it is "very late" in the cycle... I know that most of the august MCATers havent even submitted their primary apps yet. Plus I think that I have pretty good stats.

I thought hard about applying to multiple DO schools, but I have my reasons for applying how I did. I hope they dont think im cocky, because thats really not how I want to come off.

Call the school and ask if it's okay to have your letters sent now. They can create a hold file for you and keep your letters until they get all of your application stuff. I did this at a couple of my top choices to make sure they got everything ASAP.

This is an incorrect asssumption. As an August MCATer, I subitted my primary application in Early July and started to receive secondaries after I was processed. The plan for many August MCATers is to ensure that the school has a complete file prior to the release of the scores.

Once the scores are released you are immediately reviewed. If you waited until now, or when the scores are released, you will not be reviewed until after all of your file is complete which can take sometimes two-three weeks. I called several schools to see if my letters have arrived and they told me that once the letters get to the school, it can take up to three weeks to make it into the file. I am not sure if this is true, but still something to think about.

This is very late in the process, Good Luck.

two of the DO schools I spoke to told me that once they receive your LORS or application they will start a file for you.

I'm not about to say you are late in the process but I agree with EMT2ER-DOC that most August MCATers are trying to get LORs and applications in well before MCAT scores come out.

The DO schools you apply to know how many and which DO schools you apply to. When they ask you "why DO" you answer should be in line with the fact you applied to one DO school and a number of MD schools.

I urge you to take a gander at the number of names in the "interview recieved" forum... I remind you that SDN is a very small portion of the pre-med population, which would suggest that a large amount of pre-meds have recieved interviews... just a thought 🙄

There shouldn't be any problem with sending them early. They won't throw them away, but instead add them to your file.

I called the school. Sending the letters now is not a problem. Also, to add to the early/late thing... I was basing my opinion off of the many people who I personally know that are waiting for their scores to submit primary apps because they dont want to send out apps if their scores end up being poor.

Im not sure what you mean by this, but maybe you are referring to the fact that MD and DO have different views on how medicine is practiced? If so, I am very aware the the DO curriculum teaches the holistic approach to medicine by looking at the patient as a whole... such as what is going on in their life other than just their primary symptoms. I also know that OMM is taught in DO curriculums- something that I am very interested in learning. I like both of this approaches very much but there are also aspects of the MD degree that I like.. such as the emphasis on research. Ultimately though, many DO schools, especially the one I am applying to, are trying to become more involved in basic science and clinical research.

So, when all is said and done.. I dont think that anyone should be afraid to admit that they are applying to DO and MD. After all, both are ultimately highly successful in making patients better and thats why we are all hopefully going into medicine.

Sorry if this post is kind of random but Im at work and dont have much time to organize my thoughts. Id like to hear responses though.

Regarding the issue of the DO schools knowing how many other DO schools you applied to has to do with your intentions.

For many years, DO schools were seen as easier to get into than MD schools and thus many students viewed them as "a sure thing" when it comes to admissions. Then after about a year of medical school, the student would apply to an MD school for a transfer.

The DO schools are very aware of this and if they even suspect this they will bring it up in an interview or out right reject you. Unfortunately, playing Devil's advocate here, by you applying to more MD schools and only one DO school, this seems to be the case and so you are playing with fire.

You're statement is completely false. First of all, AACOMAS does not have access to the information on your AMCAS applications, and you are not required to share such information with DO school admissions committees.

In addition, it is not likely that schools would reject you for "fear" of you transferring to an MD school.

I can guarantee you that DO schools don't care about how many or what kind of other schools you have applied to, as long as you show a geniune interest in their school.

Thanks for sticking up for me OSUdoc, I want to stay close to home and there are only 1 MD and 1 DO school in my state. The DO school is a very good school with great opportunities. I dont see why they will hold this against me even if they do find out that im applying to both MD and DO.

nobody is attacking you. My point was that there is no right answer for "why DO?" but your answers to this question should be in line with your application.

I just want to say that nothing annoys me more in these forums than when people say "OMG, you are so late, you might as well just quit before you even start!" please dont discourage people to apply, it is better late than never. Keep those comments to yourself. Now is definately not late. JAN, FEB - okay that is late, but still not impossible. I know of people that have got in and applied in NOV and DEC. Thank you and good luck to all. 😉

So I want to go to this school b/c it is the only one in my state, and they are serious about getting involved in reserach. Is that not in line with my application?

definitely!

At what point in my statement did AAMCAS come up? I read it over and never once did I say that AAMCAS and AACOMAS share information. I am telling you what was told to me by admissions people at several DO schools during open houses.

They said, they are not back-ups for MD schools and that if anyone in the room thinks that they are, the adcoms know about it.

Furthermore, if I am incorrect then correct me, but do not add attitude.

Send them ASAP. They'll just go in your file. I had some letters in early and I was accepted.
