My current understanding is that if you don't match the first time around you do a traditional rotating internship, but what happens after that? Do you apply for the next match? With the same specialty? What if you don't match again?

You will match for at least an internship the first time around. If you don't match for a PGY2 position you will do a GMO tour. If you don't match again for a PGY2 position you will have to do a second GMO tour. There was at least one poster here who said he didn't match twice and left the military after paying back his obligation as a GMO.

Is there a scramble where you can get a position after not matching?

not necessarily. if there are more applicants than intern positions for the army, you can get deferred to the civilian match. more of a concern when HPSP was filling, but did happen in the AF this year. or you can be given a position in the army match that you did not rank in there is another positior availible. no real scramble like civilian.

that was a reply to IgDs post...quote didn't show up.
