What if you forget interviewer's name??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'd just call and ask. I don't see the harm...
It's either that or not sending a card. What's worse to you?

At most schools they give you an itinerary that has the time and name of your interviewer...do you still have that sheet? Otherwise, if you want to send a thank you, call the school. I don't think it's the end of the world if you don't send a thank you, but if you can it's a nice gesture.

I forgot my second interviewer's name during my first interview. The Dean walked me to my next appointment and since I didn't have to look at my itinerary, I totally blanked on the guy's name. And then when we got there, I presumed that the receptionist was my interviewer and greeted her as such. Needless to say the second interview didn't go so well...

Luckily I remembered his name when we were done... but promptly forgot it again by the time I shook his hand.

Stalk them online, usually schools will have some kind of directory.. do you remember what he/she did, or looked like?

call and say you just wanted to verify the spelling. just tell the admissions office what day you interviewed and they'll be able to find the name.

Everyone involved in med school admissions knows that some applicants want to send thank you notes and that some of these forget the interviewers names. Just call and ask. You won't be the first and certainly won't be the last.

(says the guy who is only just an applicant himself...)

whoa, you're supposed to send thank yous to interviewers? Hrmm... maybe this is why I'm waiting so long to hear back from my #1...?

Funny story slightly related to forgetting an interviewer's name-

I was introducing myself to the dean as all the interviewees sat around a table, and I mentioned an activity I was involved in. The dean says, "Oh, you must know my wife, she's also involved in that." So I ask her name.

"Sharon," he says.

"What's her last name?"

Nice one, slick...

I'm not sure everyone sends them, and its not really even a necessity. I've heard some schools will add them to your application while others will trash them. I don't think it would be a "deciding factor" for any admissions committee, but it doesn't hurt.

...Didn't Huck Finn use this idea? It worked for him, it should work for you.
Or am I the only one that remembers Mark Twain books/Elijah Wood movies?

If they didn't make an impression on you, why should you expect to have made an impression on them? 😀

I wouldn't worry too much about it, although next time you should do what I did and write it down as soon as you leave the room. That way, the only way you'll forget their name is if you're like me and subsequently lose the piece of paper that you wrote it down on... 🙁

Just wondering, LizzyM- what is your opinion about thank you notes? Are they a must, a nice but not necessary gesture, useless, annoying, etc?

nice but not necessary.

generally useless in terms of influencing the admission decision because the interviewer has made an assessment and moved on long before you put pen to paper (I write my comments no more than 3 hours after the interview and often within 1 hour).

Thanks...that is good to know!🙂

I just sucked it up and called JHop and asked for the names of my interviewers. I told them straight out that I forgot them and I know that says horrible things about me, but I feel really bad about it. When I asked for their names I mentioned meaningful details about who they were so that she would know I did know them - just not their names!
