Just thought it would be cool to know what you guys will do in case you can't be a doctor.

Has anyone thought of an altenate profession, just in case???? Do people usually have a backup strategy.

Starting a masters and applying after I have beefed up my app is my backup. I dont want to be anything else.

There is no what if...if you put enough effort into the process, you WILL get in.

i know that if i didnt get into med school..i would want an MPH or an MHA...i have to work in a hopsital setting.. 🙂 i actually still want the MPH even though i'll be getting the medical degree...may be someday 😉

I don't think I could work anywhere near a hospital if this didn't work out but I'm going to seriously look into forensics, maybe a PhD. That being said if I don't get in it'll simply be because I've put my wife through enough pain and misery and can't ask her to go through any more "application enhancement".

If I don't get into med school the first time I plan on teaching bio or going into forensics. I know that high schools in my area are desperate for science teachers. I'm going to take the certification tests, but don't plan on taking any education classes. But I would most definetly still be applying over and over until I got in.

Everyone tells me that I should go into a graduate degree program, but I honestly don't think I want to do that extra school time especially since I have no interest in research.

this sounds nutty, but i've always speculated about being an Urban Planner.. i've always wanted to get involved in local city ordinances and zoning of residential/commercial land.. it's always been "interesting", but i doubt it would be "fulfilling".. which is probably why i havent ventured down that road. i'm a big SimCity nut and have loved watching my own hometown of brandon, florida develop from its swamptown beginnings to its suburban backdrop of today.

however, even if [or WHEN] i become a physician, i plan on getting involved on the town council of the place i plan on residing and raising a family.

I only applied once. If it didnt work out, I was headed to law school.

I applied to get an M.S. in Molecular Genetics and or Forensic Genetics, which I would complete and then enter medical school.

Fortunately, I was accepted and withdrew my applications.

People usually have a backup strategy, yes.

I'll apply at least twice. If I don't get in, that is probably a sign. After that, I'd apply to Yale's MPH program. Try to make do with that. Pay off those loans and undergrad, reapply.

If I was starting over, first day of college, and there's was no way possible that I could be a doctor (let's say you had to be born into it, for instance), I would be an architect.

I'm going into medicine. If I'm out of med school, don't like medicine, my loans are paid off and I have some money saved, I'll apply to Harvard Law. Graduate, help the ACLU fight the creationists who are constantly impinging on public school science education.

So that's my Plan B for 20, 30 years from now.

If I don't get in this year, I'm done. This is my second time applying, and I don't think I can afford three times. I'll probably go into a forensics program because I think it's really cool stuff. Or I'll try to find a job to pay me to travel. Or maybe I'll start a rock band. So many possibilties.

I have pharmacy as a backup. I can't imagine doing something thats not realted to health care. oh ya and may be a Pathlogist's assistant.

I would be an ecologist and do research on pinguins in one of those little tents in antarctica. That would be aweseom.. But i'm in medical school now so that won't be happening.

If I couldn't get into medical school I would apply to a MPH program. After that if I couldn't get a masters I would either get a terminal degree (PhD, Psy.D, etc..) or work in research or a related field. If then I couldn't get into medical school I would go overseas. If I coldn't get into an overseas school I would kidnap the dean of a medical school and hold him hostage until they admitted me. I know, I know, a little drastic but hey, I don't have a back up plan. Medicine is it for me.

I disagree. Effort doesnt always pay off when the end result is largely dependant upon someone else making a decision.

I would have become a pharmacist most likely.
