Our school had some vendors come today to buy our equip for our physical diag class and for third year (I'm a second year). The medicine course director was recommending we buy a diagnostic set (opthalmoscope+otoscope) and a stethoscope. Is the diagnostic set necessary? If so, should i buy the one with the panoptic scope or go for the cheaper coaxial scopes?

I'm leaning towards the Littmann Cardio III stethoscope (vendor said it was the most popular). Any thoughts?

Right now, with the student discounts, if I buy the Cardio III and the Panoptic Diagnostic set, I am looking at $819!!! Would like to trim this down if possible.

I appreciate your help!

I would check with your M3s and 4s, but at my school, there is no need for a diagnostic set. 1. you can rent it out for up to 2 wks (and then re check them out), and 2. almost everywhere you go will have them in the room. Not in some of the inpt rooms, but certainly in outpatient clinic. I think it is a waste of money.
stethoscope: my aunt, a cardiologist, gave me the III, i like it, but it takes a bit to get used to b/c its almost too good. there was a link about it a while back. that's more up to you, my best friend doesn't have it, she has a II or whatever, and she doesn't care.

i actually think diagnositc sets are useful, especially if you're going to work in an urban, county hospital where finding these tools is impossible, even in clinics. don't get one from the rep though. go on ebay or ask the upperclassmen at your school if they're selling.

as far as stetheschopes, i personally didn't like the littman cardiology III. i prefer the more traditional bell one side, diaphragm on the other. i have a harvey and love it even though it's not very popular. (even at this stage, people like to have the "name brand"!)

The only thing you really need is your own stethoscope. Pretty much everything else can be improvised or borrowed when needed.

I was a gadget geek in med school, and bought practically everything, including a Welch-Allyn pocket diagnostic set. I think I used it a dozen times or so. Definitely not a must-have.

Since somebody said the word "stethoscope," let me toss in another recommendation for the Welch-Allyn Harvey Elite. Good ears. 😉👍

Littman Cardiology III is a good one and it does have the bell on one side and diaphragm on the other. It's good to have a diagnostic set. You might not use it that much, but there will be a day where you're glad you have it.
