Hi guys, I was looking at the Supplimental Application for UPenn today. There's a question asking what interests you the most and the least in dentistry. I really don't have an educated answer for the "least" question. I want to see how you guys feel about it.

Put down "Perio" and let me know what they say.

Put down "general practice" and see how far that gets you.

Something that another dentist mentioned to me a few years back is that he gets really lonely at work sometimes. He enjoyed the sense of autonomy, but sometimes the "loneliness" factor kicks in

Honestly, all joking aside, the thing that least interests me is owning my own practice. I don't mind working for someone else, but I don't think I would enjoy all the BS that goes along with owning my own office.

I thought it asked what interested u least?
so u still have to be interested in that thing/activity.

I would have to say dental school.
I dont mind being a dentist and stuff we learn is interesting, but it is way too time consuming.

having to deal with hygenists, and all the drama of an office.

Sac, your hoo-hoo thread was great. Reminds me why one of my potential backups for dental school is med school then a path residency. 😉

The headaches that come with owning a practice.

Its a beyatch.

I don't want to deal with wanting to treat patients the "right" way versus what their budget can afford.

Drills, bad breath, blood, working in a small area (mouth) - I'm clumsy by nature, needles, leadership skills - I have none, but beside that - there is not much else that draws me away from dentistry.

I guess the reason why I want to pursue dentistry is because my love for pain medications by far outweigh any of the above.

office drama, being worried that I'm going to catch a communicable disease from a patient, and handling patients who are overly nervous about being there.

You will 100% catch a communicable disease - But if you don't pick up, or hang up the phone as soon as the communicable disease tries to make contact - then you should be fine!

The potential of having back and neck pain. Maybe it would be a good idea to set up shop next to a massage place.

It's called vaccination. Or for some people, it is restraint from intimate contact with patients.

Yeah. I put my vote with office drama. I've heard about that from some of the dental offices I've visited. But then, anytime we interact with other people there are dramas, so it normalizes the negative aspects.

I also agree with having to run a business.

Sing it to the tune of Home on the Range, which goes like "Give me a home, where the buffalos roam."

Give me a book, where the intellect roam
Where the nerds and the professor play
Where seldom is heard, a discouraging word
And the library are not crowded all day.

Chorus: School, school on the range,
Where the nerds and the professor play
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the library are not crowded all day

For actual lyrics of the tune that I stole from...

Oh. I should be studying for my finals. =[

OP: remember that this is the question where you can really shine. At first glance it may sound like a trick question--having to expose why you might not like dentistry. But this question is really there so that the AdComs know that you have researched your chosen profession to know what dentistry really entails--the headache of keeping up with OSHA regulations was a good example--(and still want to be a dentist anyway). They dont expect you to think that a dentist's life is perfect. Show how much you know about being a dentist (the above posts have excellent examples).

Yes. For me too. I think the advent of services like 1800DENTIST is making us look and act like the ambulence chasers do in their countless television ads and cheating each other for buisness. This is why I think dental care should be provided as part of the Health Canada coverage, it eliminates the $$ factor out seeing a patient. We may take a pay cut (which would piss many in the profession off), but at least the first thing we ask ourselves WON'T be "can this patient pay for the procedure".

Hey, Alesandro Del Piero - Good point!

Having the experience of healthcare in the States and Canada, I choose US health care over Socialized medicine anyday!

That's because you're young and don't have any pre-existing conditions. Imagine if you had a liver transplant as a 16 year old, then graduate high school at 18 and get kicked off your parent's insurance. Your college insurance won't cover your Prograf or CellCept, so I guess you die or fork out the $2000+ for the prescription each month. Either that, or you drop outa college, and get a crappy low paying job, but luckily it's full-time so you'll get benefits.

Of course, you wouldn't have this problem in Canada...but damn, the lines are too long. I would have to wait a whole week to see a doctor that can prescribe me the drugs that will keep me alive for the rest of my life! Screw that!

The young dentists I have shadowed complain about running the business aspects.

The older dentists complain about insurance companies.

To Paolorossifan and anybody else who agreed:

Do you feel like you have excessive wealth and want to give it to the poor? Do you feel like you are successful and have guilt from it? Why do you want to socialize dental care?

I don't understand why you want to socialize dental care. Why not just have an attitude change and provide pro bono work, or give discounts to those in need. Shouldn't we being that anyways? Especially since we are in the top echelon of the society? There are individualized ways to give back to the society, rather than a complete hull of the status quo.
