What is a general practicioner

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just did some research online and found that nowadays you need minimum 3 years of residency to get a license. Is this true? Or is it just 1 year?

Depends. In most states, AMGs need 1-2 years of residency to get a license. In many states, IMGs need 2-3 years (IIRC there are only 2 or 3 states that will license an IMG with only 1y of residency)

But in order to be BC (and get the vast majority of clinical jobs) you need to have completed a residency which is a minimum of 3 years depending on specialty. There really isn't anything such as a "GP" in the US system any longer.

I am wondering why are people bringing up the topic of general practitioner.

It is a frequent topic on this board for people who are looking at alternatives to completing a residency. As mentioned in numerous previous threads trying to make a career as a non-board certified physician promoting yourself as a general practitioner is a very difficult way to go.

agreed

I sure did give it lots and lots and lots of thought. Could work two 24 hour rural ER shifts in Oklahoma and take home $224,640 per year, add an extra 12 hour shift per week and make it $280,800 per year.

That sounds pretty damn good at times.
