Has anybody heard of a letter of interest before? Do you write it to a med school to let them know you would attend if given an acceptance.

yes...

2 kinds of letters:
letter of interest
letter of intent...

i think they are pretty much the same thing... except letter of intent is stronger and should only be sent to your top choice... and it says.. if i get accepted to this school I will withdraw all my apps and attend your school.

the letter of interest just says: "i really loved your school and would be honored to be a student there.".. but with no 100% commitment...

letters of intent may be binding.. interest ones arent...

at least that's my take on it...

peace.

true.

i really don't see much point to a letter of INTEREST. it seems like it'd be kinda brown-nosy, but without the committment it doesn't tell a school anything that they don't already know. it'd be like telling a girl after a date, "hey i like you" rather than saying, "i like you and would like to see you again". the first is nice, but doesn't really serve any purpose.

I'm wondering how common it is to send a letter of intent and how seriously schools take it. Is it just seen as begging for an acceptance or is it a valid practice?

i felt like a bit of a brown-noser sending letters of interest, so decided to update them on things i've been doing to try to give the letters a little more meaning. the first part of the letter i talked about how i was interested in the school and why, along with my particular qualifications that would make me a good fit. in the second part of the letter i talked about a recent class i'd completed, new responsiblities i'd been given at my job, and that i was still continuing with my volunteer work. while of course i have no proof that any of this actually worked, i don't think it hurt me. plus it made them get out my file again to take a look at it if they were on the fence about me. you gotta do what you gotta do!

Basically it's a polite way of saying you will perform sexual favors on anyone in the admissions office if that school will accpet you since you want to go there really really really really bad.

Is it common to send an LOI pre-interview invite?

I don't think it is common to send a letter of intent before the interview invite. Until you interview, I don't think they take you that seriously, because you haven't been to the school yet.

On the other hand, I am thinking of sending a letter reiterating my interest to one school, where I definitely have the stats to get an interview, but haven't gotten one. Just to say, "I'm still interested in school X, this is why, and here is what I have been up to recently."

well for the most part its seen as being legally binding....
so i would consider it serious. you only send it to your top choice. dont send out multiple ones. its not nice 😉

im sure schools do take into account LOIs and not just seen as begging. just shows them that they are your first choice and you would go there over all other schools. which is a nice thing to know.
