I am wondering what poeple think is a better reason to request a transfer to a med school, providing they have a spot available.
1. a close parent with a bad type of cancer who lives in the city
2. moving to be with a spouse
3. something else?

i have actually seen students be able to transfer for both reasons. you are not going to give your parents cancer are you?

talk to your deans, they will be the most help. explain your sitaution (absolutely do not lie) and they will try and help in any way they can. at least at my school...

Yep I've seen transfers for both reasons. Both are great reasons. But do not make something up just to get out of a school you don't like. I saw someone try to do this and it bombed big time. Chances are, the grass is not greener on the other side anyway. Med schools aren't that different from each other.

Very sorry about your mom. Just be honest and explain your situation to the Dean's office and they will do their best to help you.

ram,

sorry to hear about your mom. looking back i realized my earlier post was a bit crass, so i apologize.

Any advice for someone who wants to transfer just b/c they don't like their school? Is it possible or would I be wasting my time (and money) trying?

hey buddy

Sorry to hear about your mom. I hope she makes a full recovery. I hope u can get that transfer u need. I transferred last year to be with my fiance. The process is pretty easy, your dean needs to write a letter that u are in good standing, and the school u want to go to will probably interview you and if they have a spot then u will heopfully get in.

My prayers are with your family

Omar

hey - so sorry to hear about your mom. I hope she gets well, and good luck to you in getting that transfer.

maninthebox,

short answer - no way in hell. for whatever reason, transferring med schools is incredibly difficult and almost nonexistant.

the only reasons i have seen approved have been if a spouse (or partner) moved to another city and serious family illness.

i took a 3 year leave to get a law degree. i looked into transferring to the med school at the university. they pretty much laughed in my face. i tried to explain that i am already out here, i was accepted into their law school and i am already halfway done with med school. needless to say, it was a no go.

That isn't the answer I was looking for! 🙁

As far as I've heard, it's practically impossible except for the spouse and family illness reasons. Like I said, I knew someone who tried and was pretty much laughed at.

So were you able to get back in med school again? Did you have to start over?
