What is a PI?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
principle investigator

principal (as in primary, first, main) investigator 🙂

it just means the person in charge of the lab that you work in, some people use research advisor or advisor instead of PI.

Umm, hello!

Didn't you guys ever watch Magnum PI? It's PRIVATE Investigator.

Honestly, these forums are full of misinformation. Sometimes it's scary

Hey alli cat - hope you were joking with that one 😀

...cause in this case it really does stand for PRINCIPLE investigator 😀 ...just in case people took alli cat seriously...adding to misinformation.

it actually refers to the grant process, for when you apply for a grant for research, you name the PI who is the principle investigator for the project. there can be multiple PI's, or just one with a number of other investigators. Usually the head of the lab is the PI, but not always. at any rate, they're the people who are responsible and accountable for the research and for keeping up with the funding.

Actually, truth be told the OP was referring to our favorite Greek letter Pi which is approximately equal to 3.14159265...

Priapism Investigator?
