What is allopathic?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You're welcome.

It's a derogatory term used by alternative healthcare practitionners to reffer to traditional, scientifically based, western medicine; the kind that, when studied, leads to a Medicinae Doctor (M.D.) diploma.

Actually, I think that it is a term coined by the "founder" of the western philosophy of medicine. You're right though, it is used to distinguis between alternative medicine and traditional. More recently, it has been brought to light by recent distinctions made in the differences between allopathic (M.D.) practices and osteopathic (D.O.) practices. In a nutshell though, it is traditional western-philosophical medicine.

As a service to my MD cousins, I'll provide the Stedman's Medical Dictionary definition of allopathic.

Allopathic relating to allopathy

Allopathy a therapeutic system in which a disease is treated by producing a second condition that is incompatible with or antagonistic to the first.

Quite honestly, that doesn't sound negative or "derogatory" in nature. Allopathy is what it is - a basically good thing.
