It is the subclavian vein.

Just remember that scalenous anterior lies between subclavian artery and subclavian vein. Subclavian vein lies towards the anterior and subclavian artery towards the posterior.

hope that helped!

Hello Dr. Internationa !
I found this in as an explanation in Kaplan Q-bank :

The phrenic nerve lies on the anterior surface of the anterior scalene muscle deep to the prevertebral fascia. If this nerve is cut, the diaphragm on that side of the body will be paralyzed.

So is it phrenic nerve ?

Well, jojo-z, there r a lot of structures lying anterior to the anterior scalene muscle. Your answer depends on the choices you get for the question. I mean, if your choices are -phrenic nerve
-subclavian artery
-branchial plexus
-scalenous medius

then ur answer should be phrenic nerve..since all the rest are the structures posterior to the scalenous anterior. For these types of questions u will never get 2 right choices...so no need of confusion. I would suggest you to look at the diagrams and learn Anatomy. It will be a lot clearer. Try Chaurasia for head and neck.

Hey,
I found the q in one of my review papers and this is how it was listed.
Which of the following structures lies directly anterior to the scalenus anterior muscle?
A- subcalvian vein
B- Vertebral artery.
C- Subclavian artery.
D- costocervical trunk
E- Sup trunk of brachial plexus.

So, I totally agree with dr.internationa . 🙂
Thanx
