So yeah,

Since I'm doing 2 electives in Gastro and Onc, I'm hoping to bang out a few LORs for my IM application.

But I've been reading on the forum, and I get the impression that I need 1 LOR from an Internist/Chief of Medicine.....As I mentionned in my other posts, I'm an IMG, so I don't have this luxury, and am banking my American LORs on this elective experience.

Will the Gastro/Onc letters suffice....? Or do I have to somehow mingle with the Chief of Medicine at the hospital...which I have no idea how I'm going to realistically pull off..

Thx,

LORs from faculty in Gastro/ Onc are just fine. These faculty should ideally have some sort of academic title, but assistant professors, associate professors are all fine. An LOR from someone higher up in the academic food chain can have more value, but only if the person knows you well. An LOR from a chief of medicine is certainly not required.

On a short elective, just make sure you do a good job and impress your attending and get a strong LOR from him/her. Don't worry about anything else.

Sweet, thanks for the super fast responses.

Appreciate your help gutonc, helpful responses to my concerns last few months.

Cheers,

My best LOR was from a cardiologist. Most of my interviewers commented on it, they didn't even mention the others.
