Hey guys,
I am using Barrons for the PAT section. I'am pretty much good with most part of the PAT except the Orthographic projection. I don't just get the hidden & dash line rules . In pg 210 ( barron's ) it says" When examining the choices, take great care to count the sequence of visible and hidden lines in proper order. As a rule , if you identify horizontal lines in top view from top to bottom , their order of appearance in the end view will be from right to left. The first round...."

Ok, I don't know if anyone has the book so that they can see what I am talking about. Anyway, I am kind of fustrated because I get out of the 15 problems 4 or 5 right. Can anyone help out here . If I could just understand the hidden and dash lines rules (counting them etc. ) that could just ease my fustration. Guys , don'tunderstand me wrong, but sometimes I feel like saying to myself: Ok, comes what comes I 'am gonna not waste my time on this part and devote my time in the PAT part that I am good in. Does anyone feel like that too? Or, am I the only one. I 've heard this over and over again, practice, practice, practice...., but is it not that the more you do problems over and over again you start just memorizing the figures. The next time you do that particular part you get everything right

Ok, I am not about to give up and want to encourage others not to quit, but do the best they can. So, enough talk ! My main question is: What is it about the hidden & dash lines? 😀

I really appreciate any input. Thanks

the hidden lines will be in the form of dashed lines. suppose that you're looking at a block and from the top view, there's a circle drawn in the middle. you know that a cylinder has been hollowed out from the block. now when you look at the block from the right side or front side, you won't be able to see that there is a whole in the block, but you know it's there from having seen the top face of the block. that's what it means to be hidden. you have to consider all the lines that are there even if you don't actually see them. sometimes it might help to use toy blocks. try assembling a figure together and draw its faces on all sounds. then check to make sure you have accounted for the "hidden lines" by drawing them as dotted lines.

i hope that was at least somewhat of a useful answer to your question. if you need me to be more specific, feel free to send me a message. good luck!

I had a similar question a while back. Try this thread:

I found the rule to work in most situations but not all. Also when doing top-front-end it's not always necessary to visualize the whole object. I found breaking it down and not looking at the entire thing saved me a lot of time. Keep practing and I'm sure you'll get it.
