Ok, every day when I get back from class the last thing I wanna do is study. But I need coffee to help me stay awake long enough to study. But when I do drink it, I usually get tired around the usual time but unable to actually fall asleep until 3-4am. That said, of course I am not well rested the next day.

So to all ya'll coffee drinkers out there, what's the best time to drink coffee and how much of it do you drink to still be able to get quality sleep that night?

My personal coffee cut-off time is 5PM. Any later than that and I feel like killing the sheep as I count them while trying to get to sleep at 3AM.

To the OP, i just drink it when i feel like it. Sometimes I'll drink it in the morning (for work) if i feel groggy, sometimes i dont....in the end i'm usually at the same activity level.

Usually i cut the coffee at about noon, but personally, i would drink it past 6-7 if you want to go to sleep around 11ish

11 ish? lol...although i try to shoot for no later than 1 am...

Your body builds up a resistance to caffeine. If you are used to having it everyday, it will no longer keep you awake. You have to stop it for like 3-4 days, and then hit it the day you want to stay up. I did a write up on this for my blog:

Enjoy!

One answer is stop going to class. Seriously. If you're hitting the books at 9 am instead of post-class you'll feel fresh as a daisy. Your caffeine conundrum will vanish.

how long do the effects of caffeine last? Up to 6 hours? I would say don't drink coffee after 6pm. I would then recommend skipping class and getting scribe notes or watching on internet if available. Alternatively, you could set up an exercise routine where you do something physically active for like 30 mins when you get home. Once in the routine, this will give you more energy.

If I need caffeine at night I go for green tea. I can drink it as late as 8 or 9 and still fall asleep before midnight, but I still get a little jolt from it.

I thought green tea doesn't have caffeine?

I drink coffee whenever I feel like doing so. Usually between 2-3 cups of Cuban coffee. My cut off is 2pm unless, of course, I'm on call then I drink as much is needed to stay awake. 😉

I'm on a continuous IV drip. I shuffle around the hospital with my stand on wheels and a bag with a 1000cc mix of Folgersapine and Sumatramab infusing into my veins.

Bender: "You seem a tad wound up, buddy. And your face is greasy. Real greasy. You've been up all night?"
Fry: "Of course I've been up all night! Not because of caffeine, it was insomnia. I couldn't stop thinking about coffee. I need a nap." *snores* "Coffee time!"

I stop drinking pepsi at 8 pm so I can sleep at 2 or 3 am. My recommendation is to experiment. When I was in undergrad, I drank pepsi constantly and could always sleep. Now, I feel like I very rarely feel "tired" in the normal sense. I can easily stay up until 6 am anytime, although I still need 8 hours of sleep. Over the summer, I weened myself completely off of caffeine but my sleeping challenges were unchanged. Now, I use Ambien when I need to get to sleep at a normal time, like midnight. Note that I have always been a night owl, going back to high school, and my Mom and brother are also. Anyway, that was a tangent, probably not very helpful reply. Speaking of sleep, I'm overdue. Good night!
