Over 2 years ago, Psisci started a post asking the question, "What is psychology??" http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=335379
There were many replies, however, 2006 is where it died. I believe it to be an important question that should be revised, because many of us are trying to decide where we are going and why we are doing it. So with that, please don't just read, reply as well, we all might learn something new.
For myself, I would say psychology is about the individual who walks through the door searching. It is also about a relationship, a therapeutic relationship with a counselor to become more self-reliant and less influenced by social and environmental changes. I know this may sound textbookish, but relationships, positive ones, are important in building trust and respect and moving from one state of health to another.
I found Psisci's original post to be very right now. Although i am two years from a Bachelors in psyc, I can understand the apparent fustration that he developed. I have often wondered what brought people to choose psychology as a major. For some it was because they wanted to help people and others because they were "a good listener." Many were found to be searching for answers to their own or a loved one's issue in mental health. And yes you have those who want to be called "doctor," "counselor" or whatever.
For myself, I came to this decision while working in juvenile corrections. I watched and listened as these junior criminals worked (lied and manipulated) their way through SOTP, CDTP and SVOTP. Leading behavior groups and monitoring Core and AA groups gave me an opportunity to see what worked and what didn't. But the final pull came with the psychologists, good ones and bad ones. "I could do better" was never a thought. What can I contribute always is.
thanks and I do hope this thread comes alive once again...stay golden, always
