I am currently enrolled at IUPUI to get my BS in Biology. While I was looking through all the majors that IUPUI offers I saw that they offer a pre-cytotechnology degree through IU School of Medicine. What is the better major to choose if I want to get into vet school?

You should major in what interests you. As long as you complete your pre-reqs for vet school you can major in whatever you want. You could be an English major, an art major, literally anything that interested you that your school offers.

👍

Do whatever makes you happy!

👍 Thirded. There is no universal "best" degree. Just make sure you can get your pre-reqs done and the rest is your personal preference.

I agree with everyone else... if I could do it all over again, I would have continued with my musical theater degree and taken my pre-reqs on the side.

The "best degree" for getting all your pre-reqs is probably a biology degree, but as someone who went that route, I sort of regret it.

:luck:

Yup, agreeing with pretty much everyone else. I filled pre-reqs, and I'm a psych major. Of course, I haven't gotten in to vet school yet...but my point stands!

This is the key.

The majority of pre-vet students (at least at my school) are Biology majors. But there's the occasional Chem or History major.

I hear Animal Science is big in some areas. (But apparently not near me.)

I think it would be better to ask yourself two questions:

1. What do *I* want to major in?
2. How can I get my pre-reqs done while majoring in the subject I choose?

I agree with everyone that there is no "right" major for pre-vet; just as long as you are able to satisfy all of the pre-req requirements for vet school.

I majored in animal science and I am happy that I did because I studied a variety of topics related to animals and animal well-being. Much of my coursework was focused on cell-biology, animal husbandry, agriculture, and more advanced sciences. I also got a minor in chemistry.

However, part of me wishes that I became an art major. But I didn't because at my school art majors aren't allowed to have another major or take too many classes outside of art. So it would have been hard to get my requirements.

So, my advice is pick something that you're interested in because it will help you enjoy college more. Just be sure that whatever you do you are able to get your pre-reqs. I've heard from vet schools that they like to see students take advanced science courses outside of the pre-reqs as well. They think that this helps prepare students. Maybe if you don't want to major in a science you could possibly do a minor? it is really up to you

This brings up a good point. I know at my undergrad university, many of the classes I needed for vet school, were not available to people outside a science major, or if they were, people with that major got first dibs, making it very difficult to get into those classes if you weren't majoring in that subject. Check with your school and make sure all the pre-reqs you need, are available to you!
