Guys,

Firstly, i am not dentist. I just visited this forum and found several foriegn dental graduates who are already trained looking for info to get into dental schools. What is the deal?

Do you have to go to dental school again in the US eventhough you are trained dentist in other countries? that sucks man!+pissed+
Then what happens after revisiting dental school? ( I cant imagine going to medical school for one more time in the US)

For MDs, we dont have to go to medschool again but have to undergo residency training before becoming a specialist in a hospital or to start a private practice.

What happens to Foriegn dentists? Can you get a job immediately after finishing your advanced training or whatever it is or do you have to do some kinda training after your 2nd dental school to get a job?

I need another advice.
My girlfriend is a dentist. I am just thinking about switching my career from medicine to dentistry.
I'm so frustrated with medicine because of this managed care business and long working hours. It looks like dentistry would be more exciting than medicine. It would be great to have a small office with my girlfriend and practice together ( before getting into that ego clash and professional competition!!! )

Do you guys think it is a wise idea to switch my career at this point of my life?..BTW...i am a full fledged doctor.

Any advice will be deeply appreciated.

Funny as it sounds, all a foreign trained MD needs to do in order to get into a hospital in the US is to take the USMLE (2 parts) and the clinical test (C... don't remember the name).
After that you're all set!!!! You just need to apply to residency programs just as any other MD will. No paying for school, no student visa, nothing..

On the other hand you have dentistry. If you're a foreign trained dentist, in order to become licensed in the US, you need to take the National Dental Board Examination part 1. And apply to schools, pay for it, and then take the NDBE part 2, plus the clinical exam (which depends of the state).

Of course the "going to school" part is a complete ordeal.... Is just as applying for school all over again, the difference is that you only repeat the last 2 or 3 years of dental school.

So as ironic as it sounds, foreign MDs get licensed pretty much the same that US MDs. While dentist have to almost start over.
Ironic isn't it?

OK...what happens after US dental school education to foriegn dentists? Are you set after that?

Can you get a job right away or start your practice? If that is the case ..it is not too bad man!

NOOOOO, not at allllllll 🙄 🙄 🙄
Taking almost 200,000 in loans to pay for school AGAIN is not bad at allllllll 🙄 🙄

After you're done w/school you take the licensing test and you're good to go. If you can afford to start your own practice.🙄 🙄

Thanks meggs for your kind replies.

If you have any free time..please think about my personal issue and give me your suggestion.( abt that switching career query!)

BTW...who the heck is this Henna? I just read some of her moderator posts...she really sounds like a DICTATOR 😀
People should remember what happened to Mr.Saddam Hussein.

meggs,
It is not very easy anymore for foreign trained MD's to match into a residency in the USA since the medicare/medicaid funded hospital residency programs were sharply curtailed by congress a few years ago. There are not many residency programs left over for graduates of foreign medical schools after all graduates of US medical schools have been matched.

Your welcome, you can always count on me to give you straight forward answers, no makeup on them.

About career change..... well you better post that on the dental forum, they are alredy used to that type of question. I think a few guys there, have even a format answer for such an inquiry.

About Henna...... she's an SDN veteran, definitively knows her stuff. she has only been a moderator for a few days now. she'll loosen up. I don't think she has any kids...

I'm still not clear about Foriegn dental grads training in the US.
MDs finish medschool abroad and then undergo residency training for 3-5 years depending on the speciality to become internists, surgeons or anesthetists.

How about dentists? After advanced training (going to dental school over again)and licensing exams..do you become specialists after dental school completion? What if you want to become orthodontists or oral surgeons?

Can US grads go right into practice (General dentists) after dental school? When do they get 'Hands on experience'?
Simply...Do you guys undergo 'residency training' after dental school like MDs?

Hi,

When you finish dental school, no matter if you went as a regular dental student or as an advanced standing, you graduate as a general dentist. And yes, you can enter practice right away. Some general dentists choose to do a general practice residency (GPR) at a hospital or Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) at a dental school to gain more experience before entering private practice.

To specialize, you will need further postgraduate training. Since you mentioned ortho and OMFS, ortho programs are usually about 3 years, while OMFS is 4 years (6 years for those who want to get an M.D. as well).

HTH!
