Hi all,🙂
I will attend college in a few weeks and wondering difference between pre-pharmacy and pharmacy. One of my friend told me that pre-pharmacy just comprise the necessary elements in order to become a pharmacist, if so then what is pharmD all about?

Please help...

Thanks in advance.

Pre-pharmacy is essentially the completion of the prerequisite courses which are required to matriculate to a pharmacy school. Each pharmacy school has their own requirements; so, depending on where you want to go, you need to check out each school's website to determine what courses you need to take as part of your pre-pharmacy curriculum.

Pre-pharmacy is when youre in undergrad getting ready to apply for pharmacy school.
Pharmacy is when youre actually in pharmacy school, to get a PharmD a doctorate of pharmacy. You will need to pass board exams before becoming licensed to practice, not just have a pharmD.

and also. while you are pre pharm student, it doesn't mean , you will get accept any school, you will apply.
pharm school is normaly, 6 years. you will get your pre pharm courses in 2 years. after you are done with pre courses for pharmd program which they are , chems, physics, math, biology.
you are going to apply to pharmd program. and you will start your 4 years program.
well most of the time of course ,you will get in to pharmd program, but it is a still chance that, you may not get in to school you wanted to.

Pre-pharmacy is where you learn the basics and background info you will need to understand pharmacy. The classes include, but are not limited to, biology, chemistry, physics, organic chemistry, math, english, and general ed courses such as psychology, sociology, etc. Pharmacy school is where you actually start learning about the drugs. Basically, you'll learn what drugs treat what diseases and how they work.

Just to add to what RealUnreaL is saying, the minimum amount of time to complete the prepharm courses is usually 2 years, but many people take 3 years or get their BS/BA degrees before getting accepted to pharmacy school. You need to have really good grades in order to get accepted with the bare requirements (2 years) because of the high competition.

To see which schools require what, go here:
http://www.pharmcas.org/collegesschools/directoryalphastate.htm

Most schools participate in PharmCAS, which is the application system to get into pharmacy school.

Well one is for pharmd or pharmacists and the other is for pre-pharm

Prepharmacy is a group of certain college level classes you need to take before entering pharmacy school. Generally, they consists of
General biology
general chemistry
organic chemistry
statistics
Physics I
calculus
macro or microeconomics
english I & II
Literature
anatomy & Physiology I & II
Microbiology
Government I & II
History I & II
General psychology
Sociology.
These requirements vary by school so always make sure you visit the websites of the schools of your interest.
Pharmacy school would teach you about medications, patient care. It consists typically of 3 years in a classroom studying the basic sciences, and one more year of hands on practice(Internship). When you complete this successfully, you would be awarded a Doctor of Pharmacy Degree(also known as PharmD). There is no difference between a pharmacist and a Doctor of pharmacy. They are all the same.
Make sure you keep your GPA at 3.6 or higher to make sure you are competitive when you apply. Score above 80% in the Pcat and you would probably land in an Average school of your choice. Make sure you do lots of volunteer service. Once again Good Luck

Jason that was great post and great explanation.
