i heard that harvard requires 8 LORs...we have a premed committee here, but there is little/no chance i could find 5 more quality folks out there...is that harvard number true and what are some other schools that require high numbers of LORs?

I've never heard of more than three required.

University of Utah *requires* six letters, from specific individuals (e.g. 1 from clinical experience, 1 from volunteer position, 2 from science profs, 1 non-science prof, etc).

Harvard does not require 8.

The maximum number Harvard will take is 6.

6 LORs?!? DAMN!!!!!! I could get that many (but I goto a small college where its pretty easy to have one on one attention with profs), but I think thats a bit excessive. I'm sure some students would have trouble getting that many LORs without asking someone who probably isn't qualified to write one for them. Luckily, this school is an exception to the rule

good, that makes sense. i heard that number and i was pretty sure it was BS...thanks!

Woah! That's a lot for a minimum. I stand corrected.

Someone told me that the University of South Alabama requires 5.

I assume you mean for normal traditional applicants. Because some schools may want even more LORs from nontrads with more extensive educational backgrounds.

They also may require more if you're doing the MD/PhD route--you probably need BOTH the research letters and the clinical letters as well as the traditional professor ones.

The premed letter can often get more in if you have more than 8-- I did.

You need at least 1 science, 1 clinical and/or 1 research. Many schools require 3. Some schools like those in FL require peer (that is right, peer) letters. If you are a non-trad, you need more. If you can get it, one from your boss. If you attended a grad program, one from there. Make sure you are not a serial killer.

3-5 LOR's is a good range...the school i will apply for next year requires that many!
