Hey guys, I'm just going to cut to the chase here so I don't get 100 views with no replies.
I'm a littler over a year away from double majoring in Psychology (BS) and Civil Engineering and would like to hear your opinions on what I should do next (I got the engineering degree for military purposes, because I will probably enlist for 4 years prior to med-school or obtaining a PhD).
I want to, more or less, be able to understand and help mentally ill patients (borderline, schizophrenic, bipolar) as well as go a little down the psychoanalytic route and help people that are more "functional" yet have lost motivation/or are constantly unsure of their place (anxious, depressed, etc). I'm not necessarily eager to sit behind a desk and prescribe medication. In fact I would rather help somebody by any means necessary before going that route. I would like to be well versed in neurology, so if needed I can take a patient to get an (i)MRI or CT to get a better understanding of them. And do a little research as well.
So my question is should I go with the PhD/PsyD ,the neuropsycology route though I'm not very interested with working with people with amnesia/head injuries...or should I just take the med school route and get into psychiatry. I wouldn't mind the medical training because being able to help somebody in various ways is never a bad thing. Although, I'm not sure how much neurology is taught in med school, if any.
Thanks guys, don't be to hard on my ignorance 👍
