I am having trouble finding any information about this online. What is the ophthalmology residency like in terms of rigor, hours, irregularity, etc? Information by PGY would be helpful. Also, what do you believe is the best type of internship to do for PGY-1? Thanks!

really depends on the program.
hours are regular (8am to 5-6pm). rotating call, usually from home.
you may have some lectures starting at 7am, or from 6-8pm, some programs have it saturday morning.
type of internship has been discussed in the past with pros and cons. i recommend prelim medicine with good selection of electives, the easier the better.

If you want more details on the structure of residency, you can use the search function on this forum. It's actually quite helpful.

Basically what JMK2005 said. I would choose an easy transitional year or prelim year. Residency for me is basically clinic on weekdays from 7-6 pm, weekly lectures, q6 home call, and tons of didactics, but my program is pretty academic so that will vary. It's not always easy but, compared to my med/surg colleagues I'm in paradise
