Hello Neurologists. Please forgive my question if it is unduly impertinent, but I had a "forest from the trees" type question as I love neurology but this thought keeps coming up when studying it:

What is the point of localizing a lesion of the brain to a particular region, lobe, etc. if there is not much we can do about it after irreversible injury has occured?

Am I missing something?

1. Not all lesions are irreversible.
2. Even if a lesion is irreversible, sometimes you can prevent the next one.
3. Knowing the location of a lesion or lesions helps with diagnosis.

Most things neurologists see on a day-to-day basis are treatable. The nervous system is a big place: "weakness" can be anything from a stroke to a myopathy, recognizing the location of the problem is the first step to diagnosis and possibly treatment.
