I know alot of people out there are sensitive about giving out income information but can anyone educate me on what the salary is like for a fully-licensed dentist, and where the real money is made in the private or public sector? and does location really matter??

thanks in advance.

1) The average solo private practice general dentist earns $173,000 a year, according to the ADA.

2) Just like any other field, the big money is out in private practice.

3) Yes, it does.

Aphitis gave a pretty good answer, but I would like to add more than location the dentists number of years in practice also matters. And, whether or not she/he stays up on CE credits and intergrates changes into the practice. Basically it has to be more than a drill and fill kind of place. Although, if I were you, I wold ask this on Dentaltowne where people who are dentist's can tell you what they make. Students a can only speculate.

Hi ,

This is what I remember. Of course I might be wrong. I am looking for the link.

The average for General Practitioners in private practice is 159,000. The average for specialists in private practice is 273,000.

The average for all dentists in private practice is 173,000.

The average for an employed dentist about 123,000 per year (www.salary.com).

New grads get about 80-90k per year (I have heard from a few dentists).

WOW! Dentists make a lot. Is it true that dentists are the most feared doctors?

Depends on who you ask. I'd much prefer a few fillings to a sigmoidoscopy. 😀

most feared = proctologist

Location is also a huge factor. There are definetly shortage areas in this country where you can do very well, especially when all the baby boomers retire, but you may have to live in the corn fields.

Then again, 80-90 K per year in the boondocks = 150-160 K per year in So. Cal, Bay Area, NYC or Boston.

Most dentists make $4.95 for the first minute, $3.95 for each addititional minute. Oh wait....that's my other job! :meanie:

Do proctologists have cheek-retractors? 🙂

Well, at least a proctologist doesn't have to take an impression. Or at least I hope they don't. That has to be the hardest thing in dentistry (refer to my other post)

yeah...they're called "medical students"
😱

Proctologist is a doctor, similar to gynecologist but specializes on checking out the other hole, a rear hole 😀

Why would someone want to be a proctologist at the first place?! Any proctologists here??? Then please help me solve this mystery 😉

Proctology no longer exists as a medical specialty...unless you are a GI doc doing only colonoscopies and flex-sigs, and of course a medical student (nothing like a good manual disinpaction 👎 )
