Dr. Stickel,

Enough with the "dentist posting on the opto board" thing, please. SDN is an open forum, and Jenny & I had already resolved the matter to both our satisfaction well before you chimed in. If you truly find my posts so offensive, report me to the site administrators; and for the sake of preserving the original thread, if you're going to keep pushing this issue, I ask that you send a PM.
WTF are you crying about? he's pointing out that securing financing for a practice as an optometrist is vastly different than for a dentist. i think he makes a good point.

Just curious, how many of you optometrists drive expensive cars? $60,000+

I bought an existing practice after working for the OMD for 3 years. The practice is one of the oldest in the county. The original doctor started it in the eary 1920's. I don't think you can open up cold and have the success I've had in the same time frame. I know that you can get there by opening up cold, just not in such a short time.

What do you think is the top 10 percentile for ods wrt to income in the USA???

175K?
250K?

couldnt we all just get along. I mean isnt being in the health profession all about having a self fullfillment of helping people and making a difference in their life rather than monetary motivations!!!!!!!

not really.... :meanie:

This question is for Bill or whoever wants to answer.
I was just wondering how much more, roughly speaking, do dentists make than optometrists? and since dentists make a good living, how come the job satisfaction rate is so low and the rate of suicide so high??? (these are just something I heard, may not be true, so don't bitch me out) :scared:

dentist make more on average, but they have a higher level of stress do to the nature of their job. if you are okay with not talking much and looking at someone's mouth all day then i'd say ...go for it.....but the money won't make you happy in the end!

- General Dentists have an average salary of $178,000, according to the American Dental Association (ADA) in 2003.
- General Dentists work an average of 37 hours a week.

- Optometrists have an average salary of $132,000, according to the American Optometric Association (AOA) in 2003.
- Optometrists work an average of 40 hours a week.

Remember, these are just averages, so there are professionals, in both fields, making above and below those numbers.

As for dentists having low job satisfaction and high rate of suicide:

You might want to look at the average salaries by state. I think most average salaries for optometry posted around the web are unrealistically high. The Dept of Labor says the average salary for optometrists in SC is 90K. I think its more like 60-70K in SC.
