Do residents in internal medicine compete with each other a lot, or is there a lot of teamwork? Do you fight over cases, or are oppurtunities for learning readily available? Do attendings play favorites? I would like answers from people who are residents, not pre-meds or medical students who think they know what residency is like.

Fair enough. But this is the forum for issues of concern to residents and those who have completed residency. Therefore, your post belongs in the Pre Allo forum and residents/former residents can answer it there.

FWIW, there is NO way you can generalize these things. Some programs will be very close with lots of camaraderie and others will not. Despite the reputation of Surgery, I found *at my program* the surgery residents were closer and socialized more than the IM residents (it may have had to do with the fact that fewer of us were married and that we spent more time with each other).

IM residents do not do "cases". They will not fight over admissions. There will be a call schedule and rotations so everything is evenly divided. Residency is about learning. Some places you will learn more than others, but all programs are required to have educational opportunities in place.

And I'm sure attendings play favorites..its human nature to prefer some over others.

Thanks for moving my post, now my question can get lost here where pre-meds rage and no residents will answer it

As I explained, the General Residency forum is not the "Ask a resident a question forum". Your query is not a topic which is of interest to residents or former residents.

Posts from Pre-meds are regularly moved out of that forum in accordance with SDN policy. You signed the Terms of Service agreement when you registered in which you agreed to abide by those policies.

Your post is still visible and if residents wish to answer it, they can follow the link here. There are plenty of users, residents, fellows and attendings, who read these forums.

I am sorry, as someone who has completed a residency and a fellowship, that my response to your query is not good enough.

I really felt like an "Oh snap" meme should have appeared by now.

You're welcome

Also as an FYI: there is a "pointer" left in the residency forum. That's how I got here.

You will likely get more answers and responses if you are gracious about what answers you get. If you are whiny, argumentative, or arrogant you are likely to not get many responses, or responses that are not helpful. Things to consider. Also something to remember in the future should you ever get into medical school (and residency).

That being said, I will answer your question. You won't like it.

It depends where you are. I am at a program which has more teamwork players. Whether residents work well together or are gunners depends on the residents. Of course there are always residents who will occasionally (or not so occasionally) throw another resident under the bus and try to make them look bad. You can only interview wisely and hope you choose wisely to get a program that isn't full of those residents.

As for attendings playing favorites, that again depends on the resident more than anything. Attendings are people (yes, they really are!) and in that way they will get along with some residents better than others. That being set aside, whether attendings play favorites depends on whether you are a team player, an arrogant jerk, an idiot, a slacker, a hardworker, immature, intellectual, social, etc. If you're an arrogant slacking ***** who just wants to "get by" and do as little work as possible, your attending will likely make your life difficult. If you work hard, read about things you find you are lacking in, have some sort of social graces, and show the ability to be a strong team player your attending is more likely to treat you favorably.

That all being said, there are definitely malignant residencies out there. I would try to avoid those at all costs. And they tend to change, so no I can't tell you what if any residency programs will be malignant if you ever get to the point of residency interviews.

Cry about it.

I disagree with Winged Scapula on one point. Medicine residents will fight over admissions, but mostly to avoid having a service full of rocks.

Of course. I took the OP to be asking whether IM residents would fight over admissions to see who could get the most, rather than fighting over getting fewer (which all residents do, regardless of specialty).
