Hi! I'm new to the board...anyway, I think it's great.

I wanted to know if anyone knows what's going on w/USC...have they accepted people off their list; is there expected to be a lot of movement this year off their wait-list? It's stressing me out to the max to wait.

Also, do they send out different wait-list letters. The reason I ask is b/c I saw that someone put an excerpt from their letter and it was different than mine.

Any input is apprectiated. Thanks!

Hey, welcome to SDN. You can prolly do a search for USC and come up with a lot more info than I can tell you.

As to weather people have been taken off the list, I donno. Nobody on here (out of about 4 waitlisters) has gotten off the list yet.
As to the diff waitlist letters, I have no idea about that.

Good luck. Maybe I'll see you next year.

hi, welcome to sdn, haha... i'm still kinda new myself.

i called usc 2 weeks ago, and they said they haven't taken anyone off their list yet. i do not know anything about their waitlist letters. what did yours say? you got my curious.

Yeah, what does your waitlist letter say? I, too, was wondering if USC has a "high priority" waitlist, but if their list is unranked, it wouldn't make sense.

Hey guys, thanks for being so welcoming.

My wait-list letter goes like this:

...At this point in time, however, we are unable to give you an offer for admission. You have been placed on our alternate list, from which, offers will be given at a later date, as positions become available. Please realize that the alterante list is not ranked...we offer limited numbers of acceptances until the admissions committee review processes have been completed.
...We interviewed 500 applicants from an applicant pool of almost 4,500. I am sure that you can understand the reality of the math when our class size us only 160...last year over 100 of our accepted students had multiple acceptances. This means that from May through the beginning of August, positions may become available. We will contact you as soon as we know the status of your position.

My letter never said that a quarter of the class comes off the list; it also didn't say that I have a strong chance of getting in (just like the letter I read on the board). Are your letters like mine?

Next, this is what I think/know/heard:

1) This past entering class (2005) had 9 extra students. From this board, I read this was due to a mistake of over acceptance. So if in fact they over accepted then how did they also manage to take people off the wait-list.
2) I think accepting 207 plus moving people off the list seems like too many people rejecting the school. I really don't think that many don't come to USC.
3) I have heard the list is ranked. Thinking logically about it, it seems odd to me that they would just match your profile with someone who rejected the school. Also maybe at the time that they wrote the letter, the list wasn't ranked. Maybe they numbered us after May 15.
Unfortunately, getting info from the CIA would be easier than getting info from the admissions office.
ANyway, this is what I know/heard and am thus now really confused. Does anyone else know extra info???

my letter is just like yours except it told me that a quarter of the class comes from the waitlist and that that i need to remain encouraged; my chances are still very strong.

as for your comments, i do not know much about them, but i have heard that they accepted 330 people last year, if that helps. i wish i could give you more information. i would try to be optimistic if i were you, but i think i'm all worried out. haha. good luck with things

So, I guess if your letter says that your chance of getting in is very strong and mine doesn't, then the list is ranked...and I'm not that high on the list. oh well, I guess I have to accept that I probably will not be there next year.

sigh...

i would like to see some hope in people when it comes to things...

come'n man, smile =)

•••••Looks like I got the same letter superdood got. I'm really surprised that there is more than 1 waitlist form. That would mean that the school flat-out lied about not ranking their list.

I just withdrew my SC acceptance - have been accepted since last Dec. So, hopefully (for you guys) there are many others in my same situation. It was one of the hardest decisions I've ever made - SC is in a class of their own and I truly LOVE that school. Best of luck.

bump... it is now wednesday, and i wondered if there's anything new to discuss

I called them yesterday and they said that the class was still full. I think they accepted over 200 people, so over 40 have to go somewhere else before they will go to the waitlist.

does anyone know how many they typically take off their waitlist every year?? i know someone put it on the board a while back, but i couldn't find it

I think they say a quarter of their class is from the waitlist. So with a class of 160, 40 comes from the waitlist.

oh nuthn, would like to sort out where i'm going next year... it's a big pain

i'm withdrawing from usc so there should be a spot open. Btw, I talked to the dean of admissions two weeks ago and she said it's hard to gauge this year how many students will stay. There's been delays with waitlist movement.

anyone know how strict the molecular bio requirement is at usc? thanks 🙂

Lizard King actually has been accepted at USC for a while (since last June). He is in their BS/MD degree, and I think that is when they find out if they are in USC or not.

I taught 4 current SC students in biochem at UCLA the summer before they started, and the office didn't even care if they turned in thier transcripts.

anyone know if usc sends out financial aid information to waitlisted applicants??

Jalbrekt,
Thanks for the requirement response. Originally I had decided to knock UCI and USC off my list, because I don't satisfy all requirements. Maybe I'll reconsider that decision...

We actually recieved a fin aid packet while at the second look weekend. They are also sending out the letters to accepted people, so maybe waitlistees, too. The first letter should be first week in June.

So yesterday I lost my mind and ended up calling the USC admissions office to inquire info about the UCLA waiting list. Throughout the entire conversation to the hangup I had no idea I was talking to a USC admissions officer because when I asked for Deanna, they told me to hold and brought genna on the phone. Then I introduced myself as so and so (she seemed pretty familar with my name), and moved on to question about how many have been waitlisted thus far. She said " alittle over 100". The list is unranked and may be divided into groups later in time...but the committee won't review the files til June. Anyway, it sounds like at least 40% of you on the waitlist will get in if a quarter of the class comes in from the waitlist. Hope my serendipitous finding alleviate some of your anxiety.

yipes =/

i hope nothing bad happened while you were on the phone.

thanx for the info tho. hope they get the ball moving soon... =)
i'm supposed to go clothes shopping in the middle of july, and i would hate to buy a lot of winter clothes and then find out i'll be in la. haha

bump... if anything goes on this week, post it!! =)

Yes, there is a strict requirement for mol bio. As far as I know, they expect you to take one semester of it. Some genetics courses may substitute for it.

I just called them today, and the person on the phone told me that the alternate list is moving, and about 10 people have been accepted off of it. She then said that there is no point in asking for an update of your (my) file because when they do pull you from the list, they will keep on calling until the notify and get an answer (yes/no) from you.

ya, i emailed the admissions office, and they told me that there have been some applicants taken off of the waitlist pool

That is so great that the waitlist has sttarted moving. Do you guys know if they are on the same track as last year (in terms of number of people getting in off the waitlist)?
Also, I don't know if you guys know, but does that mean they only have 10 openings or are they accepting people in waves?
Hopefully, good news will be coming our way!!!

if too many people matriculated last year, i would think that usc will not accept people in droves, but that's just my guess. i'm glad usc has finally started taking people off their list... too bad i'm not one of the 10 =(

Congrats to Hero, though.

heeh, nice job hero =)

too bad i'm a late sdner but it's always good to see someone do well =P

Any new news with 'SC??? Also, what form of waitlist letter did Hero get? I know Superdood got the more "encouraging one"

p.s. To any old time SDNers (Scooby, Jalbrekt, etc.) I say hola, I'm back from Spain.

Damn, you still exist??? Nice to see you again 2SS. I thaught for sure you would be headed off for Northwestern. Glad to see your back.

Jalbrekt, you freaken traiter, taking off the blue and gold for trojan red. I hope to do the same 😀 As for Northwestern, they axed me. I think I partied too hard the night before and after my interview, but whatever  . Anyhow, I'll be off to GW unless USC picks me up. Hope we'll be sharin' notes come August.

i think i got the more encouraged letter as well.

Anyone have new information regarding USC's waitlist?

Hey, I considered UCLA to have turned on me first. I didn't even get an interview there.

A friend of mine who is a student there just told me that the waitlist is moving slower this year than in previous years...I don't know whether it's becuase everything was late this year or because lots of people want to go to USC. I guess we'll see!

Have those of you waiting for SC done anything other than standard letters of intent and/or updates? Just curious. 🙄

So, Dr. Quinn calls me Friday morning last week to tell me I don't have to kiss my friends and loved ones goodbye. It was such a shock, I nearly woke up my neighorbood, which isn't exactly Trojan friendly.

To those of you on the list, it looks like it's moving, as Scooby, Kassar, and I have all been offered seats in the last few days. Though, I'm not giving up my spot.

hey, did all of you who were accepted off the alternate list, receive the letter with the statement saying "to remain encourage, your chances remain strong," just wondering cause that is the one i got, but i still have not heard anything from the people at the admissions office.

Naw I only got 1 letter post-secondary from USC. It asked if I was still interested in USC and if I wanted to be on the alternate list. I think it said something about remaining encouraged, but I could be mistaken.

The next notification I got was a call the morning I got an acceptance offer asking if I wanted to remain on the list. I got offered an acceptance that afternoon and then I rejected it 20 minutes later.

Peace, Love, and Goodluck!
