The title says it all. Question 11: Briefly describe the specific factors that motivated you to apply to the GWU. Please include highlights of your experiences that demonstrate your committment to medicine as well as role models, mentors, or family members who influenced your decision to apply
to GW.

Please restrict your answer to eight lines.

I mean at first glance I thought the question was: "Why do you want to come here?"

But the second part of the question is misleading. Do they want me to go into why I want to go into medicine? How exactly are the two related?

Anyone run into this?

I really saw it as three questions disguised as one:
1. Why do you want to come here?
2. Why did you decide to go into medicine?
3. Do you have any connections we should know about?

In terms of why you want to go to GW, my advice would be to write about your interest in international and public health (even if its not true, I know, that is SO bad, but GW is great in those areas!). There are so many opportunities to get involved in these things both at the school and in DC in general. Having the NIH right there as well as tons of non-profit health organizations is great. These are GW's strengths. Another thing you can mention is the great clinical exposure during the first two years, another thing GW is known for. These are just some suggestions. I am going to GW in the fall and I remember filling out this same question last year! When you get to these questions, try to figure out what the strengths of the school are and then say you are interested in them. I know that is totally ridiculous and kind of wrong, but I think thats what you have to do! Also, if you have any connections to the school, you should definitely talk about them in this essay, but dont worry if you dont!! My final piece of advice would be to somehow make yourself stick out on your GW secondary. Pick an interest and run with it or highlight something that has meant a lot to you. GW has one of the highest number of applicants (They reached about 10,000 last year), but they dont necessarily pick those with the best MCAT scores, GPA's etc (I had a 3.3 undergrad, 3.7 grad, and a 29 on the MCAT). They pick people who stand out and have done something unique or have a unique background or interest. Good luck :luck: and feel free to PM me if you have any more questions!

RachMD2B, my boyfriend/fiance is going to GW law school next year and that's one of the main reasons I want to go to med school there...do you think I should mention this in that "why here" question? (in addition to other reasons why the school is great)

I don't see how you can write a coherent, amazing piece with only 8 lines. In those 8 lines, you have to discuss why you want to be a doctor, how your experiences motivated you, and why you applied to GW. WTF? And I thought the AMCAS PS was bad...Anyway, that's the worst part of this secondary!
