I am just starting my freshman year as an undergrad premed, and I actually have to study now, a far cry from high school. Studying in the dorm is, well, is just doesnt work, but you knew that. Libraries are, eh, ok I geuss, but depressing as well. I find that coffee shops/barnes and noble work best for me so far. Anyone else have a favorite place to study, or want to comment on the significance of finding the optimal studying enviroment?

studying is all about concentration and comfort (but not being too comfortable...). i could never study at a starbuck's/barnes and noble/whatever because i just can't friggin' concentrate. i'm always alerted by sounds, smells, and often catch myself people-watching. for best results (meaning least amount of study time to figure my sh.t out), i just ended up staking out the most obscure places in our library (like in some corner on the fourth floor). dorms are definitely bad mojo.

if your library is depressing, that sucks ass. perhaps there is some other, less spirit-crushing place on campus (cafes, computer labs, lounges, etc) where you can study. good luck.

i could never study in a coffee shop; i'd look up everytime someone walked into the door; it's got to be the library and in an isolated spot where no one can find me. I am way to easily distracted.

Definitely Starbucks for me. Or any place like it. I need those little distractions. If I try to study at the library or at home I fall asleep guaranteed.

I like to study on the toilet....... until my legs get numb.

I used to only like studying in quiet, but now I kind of like studying at cafes. The noise doesn't bother me there and it allows me to feel like I'm still part of society.

And you can eat when you get hungry too! 😀

I'll never tell 😀

I think I must be in the minority...I used to study in cafes a lot, but this year so far I've found my dorm to be the best place. I also have the problem of looking up when people walk by or getting distracted by conversations...plus I'm usually pretty uncomfortable unless I can lean back and put my feet up a little.

So a decent chair setup, good music (sometimes, if not too distracting), food, and internet for breaks...my dorm room works really well except for the fact that I basically holed up here and became a little asocial right before exams!

(Plus for some reason, studying at home makes things much more enjoyable for me since I can delude myself into thinking I'm just relaxing with a good book! Whereas the library, carrels, etc make me feel like I'm actually "doing work"...anybody else like this?)

toilet, bed, office,

i try to spend most of my time away from the first two as i like to enjoy #2 and sleeping, the office with my two beautiful black cats is where i love my time, feet propped up, reading notes... etc

Starbucks, whenever possible.

But tonight I was studying cranial nerves, and unfortunately, there were a couple dental students studying the same stuff, and they were talking out loud and it was starting to mess with me. I had no idea who they were at first...thought they were classmates I hadn't met. Kept talking about stuff I didn't think I needed to know and was getting paranoid.

Overall I study well there. I'm very easily distracted but for some reason I focus very well there, but not in a library. I think I learn better when I feel like I'm being watched.

I tried studying in the library tonight. Impossible. The silence left my thoughts echoing in my head.

I think I do best at home when studying for exams. Coffee, food, and jazz. I like to sing to myself about flexor digitorums and stuff like that, too! What? 😀 Seriously, musical studying is where it's at.

When just doing light reading and reviewing, bookstores are awesome. Like a Starbucks, only a little quieter.

I hate Starbucks (as in the corporation) and would rather go elsewhere. Unfortunatley, I don't have any other attractive options nearby (i.e. even the bookstores are Starbucks). Cheapskates charged for water during 9/11 and refused to send coffee to the troops abroad. Bastardes! 😡

But I'm unfortunatley too addicted to caffeine to let my conscience get in the way of things.... 😳

Sports Bars:

1. Ambient noise, so you don't fall asleep.
2. Appetizers to munch on, with waitresses constantly refilling your drinks
(not alcohol until near the end of studying, of course.)
3. Never miss a game (you can study during commercials or the boring parts
of the game.
4. Meet fun people while you are studying----you're not gonna meet anyone
in the library.
5. Study Breaks? --> Pool, Darts, & Shuffleboard

Singing is TOTALLY where it's at! I keep forgetting to pull out my guitar to make up songs to help. Maybe I'll write a cranial nerve song.

I usually try not to study in "public" places like starbucks or Barnes/Nobles when I am studying something with graphic pictures such as pathology or gross anatomy. I am always afraid I will get the "WTF are you showing pix of dead people while we are trying to enjoy our coffee" from surrounding people.

To answer the OP, it doesnt really matter where I study. I need loud music to make me concentrate......go figure. 😕

I bought this pimp ass desk in the shape of an L with a book case and a semi comfy chair. One leg of the L just me spreadin my stuff everywhere, the other leg has all books and supplies and comp. The trick? Two power outlets, so I have to decide between the comp or the Light. Most of the time its the Light. I need that light to study.

My thoughts exactly...studying at home feels less like "work".

I'm all about studying at home... free cofee, tea, food, etc. Plus, you can pic your music that you listen to... now if I'm feeling unmotivated or there is a really good Lifetime movie on .. ha ha... I"ll get my ass up and go to a coffee shop. The slight distraction of people around you makes your concentration ability much much stronger and you are less likely to be distracted by others while taking an exam. I like having background noise like music and i like drinking beverages while I study.. I feel like i'm in jail at a library... so if you can't study in the dorm... go to a not so common coffee hangout.. sometimes if it's too loud, I'll bring earplugs
