Out of curiosity, while you are taking your Pre-Pharmacy classes, what is your occupation? Do you have a family to support or live with parents? I am curious because I have just recently taken a 2nd shift job so I can attend classes in the morning but realize now that it will be physically impossible to wake up and go to class. The job I was offered is some extreme physical labor and sometimes I do not get off until 1am (although they never mentioned that I'd be working past 11:30... Go figure.) Also I have a wife and two children so not working, or working less than full-time (so we can receive insurance), is out of the question...

well, i dont have a job but will look for one in the spring of 2012 as a pharmacy technician. I live with my parents since im forced by my parents to live with them since my university is about 25 minutes drive. I applause for having a family to support and going to school as well. I really hope your kids/wife appreciate what you are going through.
Try taking online classes at an university or community college so you can spend more time sleeping. Most online classes are non science based classes plus taking online classes at university or community college ( depend on the school), online classes dont show up on your transcript as online classes.

I worked as a customer service rep for a utility while doing my prereqs. I was making ~$28/hr with benefits when I quit to start pharmacy school. My last semester of prepharm I was taking 7 units at CSUSB, 6 units at CC and working 40/hr per week I forget if it was 2:30-10:30 or 4-midnight. It was the least enjoyable time of my pre-pharm career, but I managed. I know it's tough to find a job that provides that kind of income/benefits though. At the time I was also married with 2 kids. Now I've got 3 kids and one on the way. It worked out in the end. :luck:

When i was taking pre-reqs I was a waiter full time for 2 years but went part time when I got a part time job as a tech. I lived alone which I miss terribly now.

I live with my parents and go to school full-time Monday to Thursday. I also volunteer at a hospital pharmacy every Friday. I try to look for a job, but no one wants to hire me! 😡 I've never worked before, so I'm guessing a lack of experience is the main reason why I'm not getting hired.

^^^ How old are you? I got my first job when I was 14. Thankfully I've never had a problem getting a job. I've just started searching for pharmacy jobs over the past 3 days and I have a good shot with two of them, I hope. I'm going to three different hospitals in the morning so wish me luck!

I'm 19. My parents never wanted me to work because they wanted all of my attention to school. I need a job for some extra cash, really.

But good luck! :luck:

When I was in undergrad, I was living at home with my parents. I scheduled my classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and worked as a waitress on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 9-5. I did that for the four years I was in undergrad and made pretty good money.

I worked as a tutor during my freshman and sophomore year and was lucky enough to work as an undergraduate research assistant my junior and senior year in the College of Pharmacy. The work schedule was pretty much tailored to my schedule so everything worked pretty well. Needless to say, they weren't ready to let me go when I graduated with my undergraduate degree. 😍

I worked as a pharmacy tech at the hospital and also in the career services office on campus. Then I went on to work for a home health agency. I did mostly paperwork and training new people. I got lucky because I made my own schedule for work.

Merged with the original thread in pre-pharm. This is the appropriate forum for this thread.

Sorry about that Delano. I wasn't aware it was against forum rules, I just wanted to get more opinions...

Well, I got a call back from a Walgreens close to my house and they want to interview me tomorrow. WooHoo! Any helpful tips? I guess it's just like a normal interview?

The biggest thing the manager was looking for when he was interviewing me for a retail tech position was my enthusiasm to learn and to be part of a team. I'm not familiar with Wags' hiring techniques, so I'll let others give you more specific advice.

Biggest tip from me: Be professional and be positive.

Thanks pharm b. It was actually the pharmacist that called me and wants to interview me. I'll let y'all know how it goes.

Here are the jobs I've held while doing pharmacy prereqs:
- Fast food on alternate days & weekends - full time school
- Temp work 4 hrs a day + Saturdays - full time school
- Call center evenings / weekends full time - full time school
- Loan processing full time day shift - full / part time school
- Event planning full time day shift - ~3/4 time school for 3 semesters

I don't have any kids, and my s/o works - we split the bills.

OP: Remember that the race is only against yourself. Run it at your own pace.

For the majority of my pre-pharmacy coursework i was employed as a consultant for a tech firm. During the spring and summer i would pick up work as a heavy equipment operator which made school a little rough going. During that time i was working weekends as a pharmacy tech.

The people that plan to succeed in life are the ones that get it done one way or another within their constraints. If there is a will, there is a way.

it's cuz they hate us asians

my only occupation is sleeping and I gotta tell ya it's hard work getting out of bed everyday and staying up trying to finish homework. Sleep just calls me in at any time of the day.

Well, as you know, I had an interview with the pharmacist at Walgreens yesterday and turns out I did very well and he gave me the job on the spot. Just have to go do the drug test and such Monday. The only problem is the low starting pay of $9/hr which he said would go up to $10/hr after they have me certified... It sucks because right now I'm making nearly $13/hr and that was about to go up. He did mention, however, that after some amount of time I could get to be a senior tech and make about $13/hr but I do not remember how long he said that would take...

On the other hand, I know this will be better for me in the long-run especially since he said they would work with me and are cool with my school schedule. The district spreads three states so I have plenty of opportunities for overtime, especially now, with it being holiday season. Walgreens seems like a great place to work as far as the things they offer. I would much rather work in a hospital but since I have no experience I figure this is a great way to get my foot in the door and get some pharmacy experience. I'm just having a really hard time stomaching the fact I'll be losing over $3 per hour. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have anyone else to worry about but at the end of the day I think this is a step in the proper direction.

When you do go to pharmacy school your current job isn't going to work. What will you do then? You'll have wished you already had a job as a tech.

Once you do get into school you'll get a raise anyways that is probably comparable to what senior techs make.

You're correct, my current job won't work in pharm school because we'll have to move as there is no pharm school near us.

I am taking the tech job as I don't think my body can take much more of this intense labor. I've broken many bones from car and bike wrecks so I have bad arthritis and this type of work is extremely painful. I'll just have to suck up the pay loss for now.

Take the tech job for sure. It will be a stepping stone to more pharmacy jobs in the future.

I did, formally, accept the tech job. I took my drug test yesterday and should be starting next Tuesday. Pretty excited about the situation even with the pay cut.

I tutored math in undergrad. Then I got a pharm tech job. It both were okay. Pharm tech def paid more but there was also more stress. However, since we're all pre-pharm, pharm tech gives us an advantage or at least some experiences. Also, IMO, pharm tech is more stable than tutoring job. Good luck! 🙂
