I was just wondering what jobs everyone has had during their pre-dental years. This is the time to give advice to some people about good jobs and terrible jobs they have had or currently have.

Also, im looking for a good job that pays me to sit around (like a desk job at a hotel or something) so I can study, etc. Or maybe something that pays a lot for very little work, ie bartender? (yeah right). If you know of something, post that here. We are all looking for free/easy money right?

Apply for workstudy. My buddy works at our university's library and he just sits at a desk all day and studies. It seems one or two people a day will ask him a question but for the most part he's able to study and get paid for it. He chose the "fine arts" section of the library specifically because it is low traffic.

Good luck,
Utes

sounds like a great idea, thanks

I worked as a sanitation assistant at a general dentist's office where I sterilized, developed x-rays, and worked a bit in the lab - it was a great introduction to the flow of a dental office and I was able to observe the dentist occasionally. After this, I became an orthodontic assistant, which has been awesome. I do a lot of lab work and I work on patients, as well as sit in on consultations with the doctor. However, the best part about this job is my introduction to the way a dental office is run - insurance, payment plans, teamwork, staff issues and most importantly how a respected and successful dentist treats her patients and staff members.
I live in Pa, so none of these jobs require a formal education beyond x-ray certification - just training - and the pay is decent. Often a dental office, in my experience, welcomes part-timers who are still in school. Therefore, your hours are pretty flexible during the week, with weekends off to study (fun fun).
Anyway, I would recommend these jobs - just ask your own family dentist or orthodontist if they would like some help, or make up a resume and hand it out to all of the dentists, orthodontists, oral suregeons or more that you may be interesting in working with! Good Luck! 🙂

I worked at a go-cart track my freshman, sophmore, and part of junior year. Stay away!! Heed my warning! It gets you no experiance in anything productive, and im sure increases my chances of getting cancer now because of all the gas fumes and tobacco use! (I have quit since then, thank god... stupid, pointless addiction)

I work at a medical laboratory which hopefully won't give the adcom the idea that I am a failed pre-med. Good things are that pay is good, we ocassionally run tests for local dentists, it is open 24 hours to service hospitals so many shifts available and you work with a lot of blood, body fluids and body parts which can show the adcom that you are able to stomach such things.

Bad parts are that the medical technologists tend to be very strange people and seem to think alot of themselves. This seems to be common in the health care fields though.

My freshmen year I worked in the cafeteria......Don't do that!!! Then I worked on the maintenance crew in the complex I lived in my sophmore year...that sucked too. I now work in a parking booth on campus. It's pretty boring but I do get a lot of studying done. I'm actually at work right now. I would recommed getting some sort of desk type job so you can do some studying. It sucks somedays but it is worth it when school gets really busy.

I am an officer in the military.

I ran my own lawn bussiness. Did about 50-60 lawns in a week. It paid for all my undergrad and then some.

sounds like John in Desparate Housewives 😉

Worked as a gymnastic/cheerleading coach (& was on the cheerleading squad), drove a bus for my school's transit system, shoe retail, and lifeguarding...of course not all at one time...the best job for money and time sake was driving a bus. Easiest job I've ever had.

Ive been dental assisting since about senior year in HS (bout 2 years). Its good experience and pays well. Knowning the nomenclature of the surfaces of the teeth, taking/reading xrays, actually seeing the procedures done, ect...if it doesnt help you get into d-school it should at least give you a head start. Im hoping for both, lol.

I've been a lab technician (molecular biology lab) for over 3 years. Got my name on a few publications and worked towards an MS part-time, but other than that being a lab tech hasn't been very personally fulfilling.

I like working with my hands and started thinking of dentistry as a profession. I shadowed a dentist to get a better feel for the field and found a dental practice to be a good fit for my capabilities and personality. Now here I am... 🙂

Ha, I seriously thought about doing that after i found out I got into dental school, but realized the job was pretty crappy and I probably would have had to omit the part on my resume about having an education.

During college I worked on campus at the computer labs - $14.50/hr with no deductions for medicare or ssi since it was a state school. Not bad for 1998. After graduation, I taught English in Japan for a couple years, then moved back to the states and worked in pharmaceutical reimbursements. The Japan stuff was fun and easy, the pharm stuff not so interesting though I developed a really good understanding of how to navigate through healthcare insurance red tape.

uhmm

waiting mostly

my interesting paid gig was doing the ct/mri neuroimaging for brain surgery patients at hopkins hospital... and my rewarding unpaid gig was teaching baltimore city kids how to read... but my real passion was just being a stupid college kid doing really stupid college things

enjoy the ride
