What kind of car are you guys planing to use or are using in school?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Yeah, I won't be posting those photos anytime soon. I have to keep everything locked down - you know how it is. 🙂

Thanks for the fun guys!! I've been laughing a lot 🙂

I'll probably buy a 4-5 year old CPO domestic compact. I drive an '03 Audi A4 right now. It is a fun car but I won't be able to work on it during med school and I can't afford $150/hour labor at the dealership, so it seems a cheap domestic compact with a manufacturer's warranty is the best bet.

the hybrid is like 3 - 6K more I believe, depending on what you get. You save about 33% on gas. Assume about a $1000 on gas per year for the non hybrid, it starts paying itself off after about ~5 years at ~$330 per year starting on year 3 or 6 of ownership.

Well that car is pretty, on the inside. Do they make SUV's in a hybrid?

Yea the hybrid does 15 mpg.

Lol jk. I always have a personal facepalm moment when I see a big ass SUV with some little green leaf decal or something to make it look like it is more enviro friendly when in fact whatever it is referring too I am sure it does absolutely nothing except look fashionable by making it look like you care about the environment when in reality the mpg is still probably like 17 city.

Haha, Yeah, you're probably right. The only reason I ask is that I live in an area that gets snow (and not just a little bit). But, I've lived 3 years here without an SUV, so my next car doesn't have to be an SUV - just it would make it easier. There have been a few times when the snow was significantly deeper than the clearance of my car - it doesn't matter how good your car is in the snow, if the snow is deeper than the clearance of your car, you aren't going anywhere. Also, I'm not exactly sure where I will end up for residency - so I don't know that an SUV will be necessary then.

It really depends on the SUV though. Small SUVs that would normally get in the mid teens on gas, get in the mid-20s on a hybrid, so its definitely a difference, especially if you find yourself having to regularly haul a good amount of people or stuff.

I have a full-size sedan, and I'd have to completely change my way of thinking even when shopping if I had to settle for something like a Prius. Having to debate whether I need to call someone for help or borrow someone else's car every time I buy a new TV or piece of furniture would be annoying for me.

I'll give it a go...

Sgemmell, you want to buy a Mercedes and recreate that picture with your halloween costume then post it here for us nerds to see.

Hey, the girl on the right is wearing my Halloween costume from last year - it was soo ridiculously cold, some guy dressed as a cop let me borrow his coat on the way into the club. It was fun.

Sorry but this car looks ridiculous. You could easily do away with those accessories on the hood and trunk 😀

if that's what I think it is, it comes stock with the spoiler and scoop.

Blasphemy! Take that back.

STi, so yes all that is stock. The newer ones have a rear roof spoiler as well.

Gotta agree---ricing out these cars is---ehh.

And I live in a city in which the import scene is huge.

What about that car is "riced" out? The wheels/rims? The spoiler? The hood scoop?

Like you said, the spoiler and scoop are stock for the WRX STi, so I'm not getting the hate. I don't love the way it looks, but its one heck of a car (speed, handing, etc.) and that's how it came from the factory.

I stand corrected--it appears many of those features are stock.

👎thumbdown for me.

No worries, I won't tell our admissions staff :meanie: (just messing around, of course). To be fair, everyone has their own taste in vehicles. My bad, I guess I put too much personality into those posts and the essence of the internet screwed up :smack:.

I don't particularly care for the looks of the Lotus Elise, and I'm sure there's someone on here who will disagree. With so many vehicle styles you're bound to despise a few cars. That is fair. I'm still trying to figure out what student drives their Lotus to school. It's a fast car for the price, just not for me.

I want one still, lol

not saying you are but from this post it sounds like you are a hoarder.

Hanging on to my '05 Volvo XC 90- already has 110,000 miles and its paid for. I've also got a beater Mercedes 240D I'll go back and forth with on the weekends or ride my BMW K1200LT.

Well, that lasted a month, after spending 3 grand in maintenance and repairs and looking at another 2 grand to put tires on it and fix the now broken power steering, we traded in the XC 90 on a 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. Love it! I hated having another car payment but the wife made a couple of valid points: if it breaks while you're in school, and we're at WVSOM, LMU-DCOM, ATSU-KCOM, etc. where are you going to get it fixed? Every little town has a Ford dealer-Volvo, not so much. And if you're somewhere and commuting, do you really want to try to deal with fixing it, getting the backup, etc. when you really need to be studying?

Just sold my 1998 Chevy cavalier bi-fuel (ran on gasoline or CNG, compressed natural gas) since it was involved in an accident and was a little too costly to repair.
Now I've got a 2008 Toyota Yaris with 40k miles on it. Get great gas mileage, but I sure will miss paying $1.49 a gallon for CNG.
