Hello, my name is Tina. I 'm a freshmen at Tuskegee University, and majoring in Animal poultry in veterinary science. Once I graduate from this school I want to attend UGA for graduate school in Reproduction. I'm still hesitant about actually studying in that field. I was wondering what kind of careers can I obtain with a BS in Animal Science, and Master in Reproduction..

Thanks for taking the time to read! 🙂

Why do you want to go to graduate school if you aren't sure what you can even do with it?

Well, a BS in AS gets you nowhere but into grad school! I've got a BS in AS, and can't find a "real" job for the life of me. I can barely pay my rent from my vet tech job, and I'm not "qualified" for any other jobs in the region. EVeryone wants a masters or 5+ year of experience (and yet my veterinary experience doesnt count for them!). I'm just hoping this tech job will get me through until I get into vet school.
I've thought about doing a masters, but haven't, because I really don't know what to study. I've thought about Repro, thought about nutrition, but know enough about the specific fields to know if I would want to have a career. I've never really wanted to do anything but be a veterinarian.

It would help if you narrowed your reproduction interest down to a species, too. What animal/s would you like to study? The jobs all vary depending on the species and you'd have to have more specific interests to pursue a graduate degree.

I have to disagree with you here. I'm an Animal and Poultry Sciences major and while many of my classmates intend on going to vet/grad school there are also a good number who will go on to managing farms, working for the USDA or big companies like Perdue, working with farm lending, working in labs... You get the picture! If you get a lot of experience while you're in college (internships, co-ops, etc.) you will be in much greater demand afterwards.

Yeah, grad school isn't really like, a continuation of undergrad that you go to just because you can't get a job. At least, graduate school in the sciences isn't. You should really have some kind of idea of why you want to go and what you want to actually get out of it before you apply.

i agree with this...i pursued a master's degree just b/c i didn't know what i was ready to do when i graduated with my bachelor's. i thought it would be an extension and buy me some time and then throw me into the arms of a job when i would finish. however, it was the exact opposite. i had no idea what research i wanted to focus on and what area i specifically wanted to go into. as a result i realized my interest was in a completely different area and left that grad program. now that i've figured it out, i'm doing research in the area i'm interested in and it actually serves a purpose (for me).
