Listening to good music when studying is the only way I stay (relatively) sane.

Scary how similar this is to one of my study playlists. I usually like acoustic, jazz, classical guitar, etc. (ie. something pretty chill).

for serious studying i can't listen to anything with words.

I need hardcore metal. That's how I meet hot guys in bands. And get my heart broken by them 🙁

I'm not in medical school yet, but wanted to share some awesome music that was made for studying:

Be sure to choose ones that have beta waves that help you focus. When I first started hearing it, my head felt kinda weird at first as if all of it was being activated at once. I think it actually helps making connections easier. The one called 'breakthrough' is unstoppable, I love it.

i listen to alot of buddha bar, thievery corporation when i need to get down to business. I sometimes listen to www.di.fm and listen to their trance channel. good stuff to drown out people talkin at barnes and starbucks 👍

death metal works for me...or another type of metal, drone metal like ....Sunn O))) or Boris. Jazz works good too.....Coltrane, Miles Davis, Monk..

If doing work, dance/techno, heavy metal (usually neue deutsche haerte)

Who in particular? I've been looking to expand (really, build) my collection.

Miles Davis - "Birth of the Cool" 😎

Mozart is supposed to get those neurons firing! I think I am using "mornings w/ mozart" cd....not bad.

Chieftains and The Dubliners are good. Try going to pandora (www.pandora.com), and type it in. you'll get similar music too.

trance, breaks, drum n bass. my recs:
ferry corsten
tiesto
nick warren
dj micro
dj icey

they worked great for me, along with a red bull or a sobe no fear, i managed honors in every 1st and 2nd year class except 2 high pass and every clinical rotation 3rd and 4th year except 1 high pass.

ok so im not sure as to does music really help people when they study or not because it seems that when I study with music i retain like 50 of the info and that is like studying anatomy, physiology and biochem as well as histology and embryology now are there any studies that show if music is helpful when studying and what types or does it depend on the chemical make-up of the individual persons mind??

BUMP!

What are some good instrumentals or soundtracks that you can listen to while studying in medical school?

I listen to classical music or gospel normally, as it's pretty soft and makes for good background. I generally lean toward classical when I'm studying something logic intensive, because for whatever reason music with words messes with me when I'm trying to think.. weird.

i used to work graveyard at a clinical lab while taking my post-bac courses. the big sonic chill is a downtempo and chill music program that plays nightly but they also stream the previous night's show on their website. enjoy

John Mayer, Marvin Gaye, Elvis Presley...

I'm a huge rap fan, but the most I can tolerate is some Bone while studying. If I listen to bangers, I usually break my neck and get way into the song. If it's something lyrical, I pay too much attention to the rhymes and end up rewinding every few minutes 😛

All of you were wrong.

The correct answer was "Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Greatest Hits"

I find I'm most productive when reading to some of the singles from Pantera's "Vulgar Display of Power."

...or was that for lifting?

That is a usual problem. Sometimes I like listening to soft Piano pieces, Other times I listen to opera,..Mozart,..Beethoven,..Rock,..Waltz👍...etc.
But I cant decide what is the best for studying & focusing..
What do you think???

Listening to music takes away from full focus. Don't do it.

So does breathing and a beating heart.
What I do to study is hold my breath while in an extremely cold ice bath to slow my heart. You should try it.

Or here is a wild idea... listen to what you like.

you have larry the cable guy in your avatar...are you sure you don't mean lynard skynard?

If I remember correctly, I learned in a psych class that listening to music that has no lyrics while studying was ok (didn't interfere with the cognitive processes or something) so classical music is a good choice 😉
