I hate myself for asking this but I was curious to hear from actual practicing dentists what kind of people should not go into dentistry? what are their qualities and why will they not be happy in this career (or at least excel in it)?

Excelling at something, and being happy doing it, are two very very different things.

of course. then what kind of people are not happy being a dentist? and what kind do not excel at being a dentist?

Those who have poor interpersonal skills, bad business sense, and ****ty manual dexterity.

Of the three above, poor interpersonal skills may be the hardest to improve upon due to personal habits limiting worthwhile human interaction. Since some people appear "stuck" in their own ways, they may not see this as a problem, which limits their productivity in more ways than one i.e forgetting to do post-call checkups, rigid interaction with staff, etc.

The latter two can be taught however, if the person is willing enough to learn.

If u cant socialize forget about it. if you cant get the hang of drilling by second year of dental school maybe you should forget about it. if you are afraid to work on people with HIV, hep C, hep B,stds, HIV/HEP C coinfection and the wide range of diseases yah really go become a lawyer or a computer tech cause this job isnt for you.

also if you thought college was a challenge you overcame lol yah forget about dental school 😛

Among my dental friends and acquaintances I have noticed some of the most frustrated people in dentistry are the most rigid perfectionists.

This are the guys that made great grades in DS and may have gone on to a specialty but were socially stunted. When this guys finally get into the real world were making a buck is the goal not making a grade they just cannot figure out how to survive. In the real world they can not figure out why they can not keep staff and patients from leaving them for other dentists. Then they look around and see "sloppy" dentists are doing far better then they are doing which makes them get mad and depressed about their life.

If your obese. You will not be able to slide in to work on your patient. I'm serious. You don't see obese people in dental school.

LOL! SO true. I've never realized this hahaha...but then again I don't really judge people by their appearances so I'm usually the last to notice these kind of things.

1. Shame on you.
2. Nice observation.

Hmm...you have me worried now.

do you know of anyone that regrets going into dentistry?

I saw a rather (very) rotund female student at one of my interviews.

I saw a guy with only one arm who was a D-3 at a school I interviewed at. I actually didn't even notice until he left the room after talking with us for like 20 minutes. Pretty amazing he is doing dentistry and with a well trained dental assistant, he'll probabaly be able to everything.

A dentist once told me that you need three things for this field: a good back, steady hands, and a good eye sight. Also, one of my interviewers spoke about the difficulty she came across from having back problems, which eventually led her to leave private practice.

Hope this helps

get loopes and learn how to use a mirror and 90% of your problems are solved
