I've been hearing from a couple of friends that they are sending love letters with updates to their top choices.
I'm just wondering what kinda stuff is worthy of updates.

For example:
1. the department nominating me for a med student award?
2. starting a new clinical research project?

Well, I am comfortable with my current situation as it is but it seems like everyone I know is updating their programs.

What do you guys think?

Your first author paper was published in NEJM.
You just got back from Stockholm where you picked up your Nobel.
You just finished your research project where you cured cancer...not one kind...all of it.

I wouldn't update with either of these.... I'm not quite as stringent as gut onc, though 😛.... If you get a first author paper published in any peer reviewed journal or win a prestigious medical student award, then I would go ahead and update.....

Of course, it may depend on your specialty... I'm applying in psychiatry, which I think is probably slightly more forgiving of too much/too little communication...Either that or the program directors lay down on couches and analyze our post interview communication.
