Hi, I am a sophomore at UNC, major in biology.
I am not sure about med or grad school for my future career, but it is clear that I want to study and have a health related job. Now I work at genetics lab at my school as a part time technician and I have my project for my boss who tries to write grant on my work. I starts this job b/c I've heard that research experience is required for both med/grad school admission. However, I have totally no idea about community service or somthing like that b/c I didn't do my secondary education here, in the United States even though I am no a resident of North Carolina.
Can I have some advise about community service or other kinds of activities for med school? I've heard about blood driving or soup kitchen, but I have totally NO idea what they are though.

You should get involved with what you think you would really enjoy. I volunteered at one hospital and did not like it because they put me in a room where all i did was make packets. I wanted to work with people not paperwork. However, some people have really good experiences working at hospitals, it just depends. Contact your local hospital to find out more details. Soup kitchens and blood drives are good, but they are usually only temperary positions, med schools are looking for long time comminment. I enjoy working with people so i decided to become a mentor. They are many options, you just have to look for them. I have worked with families with HIV and now I am starting to work with children of domestic violence. I recomend doing a google search or craigslist.org has a volunteer section. Good luck. remember, enjoy your undergrad years becuase it is nothing but work after you graduate. 😀

Actually, research is not required for medical school, but is most definitely required for grad school. As the second poster said, do something you enjoy. It's a great time to explore your interest and see what direction your career might head towards. Research is great, of course, but there are so many other things you can do out there. Second year is pretty crucial though if you want to apply after your third year. So no time to sit around. Good luck.
