What kinds of awards?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Eh, I don't really have any awards so I just put a scholarship down.

so what kind of awards does a freshman usually hope to accumulate by the winter quarter ???
I have to apply for a scholarship and I have none except the deans fellowship for a high GPA ... I was just wondering what others might have ??
like just to see the general trend you know .. :lame:

Here are mine. They are kind of unusual; however they are awards nonetheless.

Awards:
CMB- Combat Medical Badge. Award only giving in combat to medics who are recommended for the award with written statements after treating casualties under direct enemy fire.

-ARCOM/VALOR Army commendation medal with Valor. Award written as being on the ground and treating 8 casualties and forming the casualty collection point under direct enemy fire. After being ambushed and taking 12 American casualties; and 14 Iraqi soldier casualties, after house rigged with explosives was detonated.

-ARCOM - For serving as a medic on over 500 combat patrols and missions, and documented as having 100% survivability rate of all casualties.

- ARMY ACHIEVMENT MEDAL- documented as saving the life of at least 11 people in combat.

- 2 random Army achievement medals for various medical duties in Iraq

-Army Good Conduct- Given to soldiers every three years with no negative marks or counseling’s.

-Valorous Unit Citation

-Iraqi campaign medal

-2 Overseas ribbons

I didn't get my first undergraduate award until April of that year. No freshman is going to have raked in the awards. No worries.

Just a guess based on the applicants I saw this year: the majority of people offered admission to a top tier school don't list any "awards".

Dean's list and other gpa-based awards are redundant when every grade you've ever received is on the application.

Eagle scout is pretty common but it is usually awarded while the boy scout is in HS so some would argue that it shouldn't be included.

Phi Beta Kappa impresses some people. Most other honor societies aren't as impressive.

A research prize would be impressive.

I thought eagle scout would be listed under activities, since your a scout, but its just that your rank is higher then a regular scout. Is this wrong?

Perhaps, but Eagle Scout is very difficult to attain (so my Boy Scout friends have told me, anyway).

Eagle scout is an award that can be listed in the experience section. Being involved in scouting is also an experience and it could be classified a few different ways including leadership or volunteer, non-clinical. If you participated after HS graduation (e.g. as an assistant scout master) then it would be favorablly received. Some adcom members think that listing stuff you did before HS graduation is padding, even if it was hard to acheive. I think that if you are the only one in the world with the award then it might be OK to list something from HS (e.g. an olympic medal, Intel science prize) but awards that are given to hundred or thousands in HS are less impressive.

How about sports awards in college (ie All-Academic team, Intercollegiate Scholar Athlete, MVP, Best Attitude)?

I didnt put any words...The only ones I have received are Deans list anyways, which is rather ptless.

Agree with Lizzy. If you are Phi Beta Kappa, put it on your application. It is pretty respectable.

I was an academic all american in a college sport. It seemed to help. So put that down.

id put those lesser awards in if you haven't already filled in the 15

hows dean's list redundant of your grades if the dean's list is only given to the top % of your particular school. Is it better to not even mention it??

Are employee of the month's not worth putting on there?

hahaha i think it really depends on where u got it from.... I would put it on if i got an employee of the month from my EMT company/hospital than sure yea, but if you got it from mickey d's or wendy's i wouldnt bother

would school based research prizes/grants consider impressive? or it has to be from a well known company like pfrizer or NIH?

I put all of my awards under one heading "University of XXXX Awards & Recognitions" since I already had 14 activities.

"I received the following recognitions at the XXXX University of XXXX Awards Ceremony: 1) American Institute of Chemists/Department of Chemistry & Physics Outstanding Student Award, 2) Department of Mathematical Sciences Outstanding Student Award, and 3) Selection to Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

At the XXXX in May of XXXX, I was awarded "XXXX" for presenting "XXXX." This was the culmination of semester-long research that I performed concurrent to my XXXX course. (talks more about it briefly...)

Additionally, I was inducted into the XXXX chapter of the XXXX Biological Honor Society on XXXX. This acknowledgement is reserved for a select number of XXXX students majoring in Biological Sciences, chosen from the top 10% of each class.

I also achieved Dean's List honors all semesters."

Hope this helps. 👍

So if you won a couple of wet T shirt contests, you probably don't want to include that on AMCAS?
