I'm having a bit of a dilemma deciding on what to major in undergraduate school. I had originally planned on pursuing a double major is business and chemistry and afterwards going on to a pharmacy school, but now that I have gone through my first semester have come to some startling realizations.

- I'm not that great in Chemistry and Bio; getting B's in both lectures and labs for fall.

- I was taking like 7 classes in all, during my fall semester and have gotten a 3.3 gpa so far.

- The only A's I got was in my business classes, which were insanely easy, considering that I didn't even study for them concentrating only on my bio and chem classes.

- I have realized that a business and chem major is just not possible if I want to graduate in 4 yrs, and i am not intending on staying any longer than that!

So here are my options:
A. Major in Biology and minor in chem, concentrating on my science classes and getting grades not so great. I can really see myself getting C's and B's in these courses.

B. Major in Chemistry and minor in Bio, concentrating on Chem, b/c I'll be needing a better focus on chem for pharm school, but my grades will probably be even worst like mostly C's.

C. Double majoring in 2 areas of business and just minoring in bio and chem, taking all the prereqs for pharm school. The only reason I want to do something in business is b/c it's not so hard, it is fun to me, but I don't see myself actually doing anything with it. For example it's not like i want to own my own pharmacy one day, my ultimate goal is to just work for a big company or something.

So which option looks best? A, B, or C?

Thanks to anybody who can help me out here.

Well, if you planning on going to Pharmacy school you are going to need to take the pre-reqs so my advice is to major in what ever you want as long as you do well in both the pharmacy school pre-reqs as well as the classes of your intended major.

I majored in biology, because once you add up all the pharmacy prereqs there aren't that many classes left to take.

I'd reduce your classload and concentrate on your prereqs with some easy classes. Bio + lab is 4 credit hours, so is chem. You only need 2-3 other classes for a normal load.

I agree with Dana, Biology makes more sense if you are trying to economize your class load, since you take care of A&P along with general bio...plus most pharm school classes are not analytically based, so studying for biology classes is probably better prep than chemistry. If you're interested in business I'd highly suggest getting a minor...the business major is mostly a waste of time anyway; the minor generally contains the real "meat" without the fillers. I minored in business and loved it. You learn a number of important life skills from basic accounting to important finance concepts: TVM, Amortization, stock and bond valuation, etc... In fact, I'd feel very uneducated if I had decided not to do the business minor. Plus, if you ever decide to pursue an MBA you're already half way there.

I did the chemistry major with the bio minor and I think that combo prepared me really well to apply to pharmacy school (haven't been accepted yet). However, if you are a chem major you will do a lot of things which really aren't going to help you with pharmacy and as you note, may pull your GPA down.

I would not advise you to do the business major/science minor combo. As you post, your business classes seem very easy compared to your science classes. Well, there are some reasons for that. I'm not trying to start any kind of flame war here, but if I was on a pharmacy school adcom I would vastly prefer to see a science major over a business major. It is more applicable to what you will have to take in pharmacy school and (assuming your GPA is ok) it will show that you have the ability to do well in upper-level science classes and labs.

If it were me, I would pick Option C. As long as you will have all of the prereqs completed for pharm school, I think it's best to major in something that will help you get a high GPA.

Thanks sooo much for the advise. I think I'll go with a bio major, minoring in chem and maybe business if I can.

This was really all helpful to me.
