Next time, try not to use such a blanketed, general statement such as DO schools are easier to get in to than MD schools. You are likely to upset some people, especially in the PRE OSTEO forum. Whether you meant it or not, i can see how it would be offensive to some.

When people say that it is easier to get into a DO compared to an MD school they are most likely looking at the statistics. In general, MD schools have higher average MCAT and GPAs compared to their DO counterparts. Thats really the main difference. I think the overall average for DO schools for GPA and MCAT is like a 3.45/26 compared to the MD average which is probably more aorund a 3.6-3.7/30. Another thing people site is the grade forgiveness that the DO schools allow. If you do poorly in a class and received an F or a D (or even a C), you have the option to retake the class and if you perform better then AACOAMS will not count the first grade into your GPA.

The difference in difficulty to gaining admissions really isnt that big (altho some will swear otherwise) and getting in to medical school is difficult no matter where you apply. You are going to need to be a stellar applicant. You better belive that the people that who got accepted with low MCAT or GPA made up for it 10 fold in another part of the application. Good luck!

Stats are lower, yes.

In 2006, there were 51,099 applicants to DO schools. 3,908 students enrolled. If you think you can just apply with good numbers and get in, good luck.

Im convinced its the applicant pool. There are so many effin applicants in the allo route, and a lot of the students that have super high and balanced stats will only apply allo. But as was said before, its all relative. Both are hard, MD just tends to be more difficult as of right now. but this gap is closing fast. take a look in 10 years and see how narrow the margin is. I wouldn't be surprised if a DO school like western breaks a 30 average on the MCAT soon.

1) I think one of the things is the Homeless-to-doctor program. Let's face it, the way DO schools recruit homeless folks right off of the street and put them into advanced DO classes is almost amazing. Who ever knew those homeless bums could outperform other students on COMLEX? When they take their "Will work for food" signs after second year and change them to "Will do lap choles for food" tears come to my eyes.

2) Do the Dean's daughter. Nothin says "Love the DO's" like getting the top man's 16 year old pregnant and marrying her in Las vegas. Then, you just get a velvet Elvis portrait and hang it in the lobby. You'll graduate in the top of the class even if you lost your legs in a freak combine accident in Bangladesh. Blood is thicker than mucscle energy any day.

3) DO schools are one of the few professional schools that accept animals. Yes, they may be cute and cuddly, but they certainly lower the test scores of most DO schools because all animals learn to speak French instead of English. Except for the Doberman and the Green Mallard-tailed Porpoise, few animals maintain the intellect for 4 years of medical school AND residency.

I also had numbers 4 through 16, but chose not to post them, as most DO's would probabaly not understand them anyway. After all, it's soooo much easier to get into DO school.

I apologise in advance for those who are offended by the sarcasm. I was offended by the original post and chose to answer in the best darned DO method I could handle. Having failed miserably, I hereby resign....from everything. How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop....?

Stats are generally slightly lower but acceptance rates for most schools are not any higher or lower than the average MD school. I'd provide links but I'm lazy. You can find em.
 
its because DO students dont even have to take the MCAT right?

It's not easier for everyone. DO schools just add an extra section to the MCAT. It is right after Physical Sciences, it's called Physical Hotness. A lot of pre-meds who apply to MD schools score a 0 in this catagory for some reason- I don't know why...

On the other hand, how can you deny some of these DO applicants with a 52 MCAT?? My advice to you would be to spend less time on secondaries (and trolling) and work on your abs. Good luck!👍

No, we have the VCAT (Voodoo). Basically, you have to raise ultramega chicken in 10-15 minutes using only the bones of a dead possum and guts of a bat. Do it and you are in. We never forget our voodoo roots though. All of us on clinical rotations are required to smear ourselves in feces and blood before seeing any patients. It may take some getting used to for the patient but, after we threaten to curse their first born, they usually settle right down. Below please find a picture of our founder, Mr. At "Voodoo" Still himself.

The homeless to DO program was stopped due to the infestation of scabies and lice on the cadavers. Since the cadavers were just not good enough to be cut open by MD students. So, the program became the Homeless to Anatomy Lab program. It was a combined effort by social security in order to help reduce the number of people on the social security roles and prevent those eye sores from being seen (ever again).

They just instituted a new program. The Junior Junior College to DO program. Basically any tricked out, Meth snorting, cocaine using, binge drinking, yuppie rebel can apply. As long as there is a pulse and they can handle withdrawl symptoms for the whole 10 hours of DO training need for the degree, they are in. wow. Im sorry I offended everyone so much. The only reason I ask is that I see a lot of people suggesting to people with lower stats they should apply to DO schools rather than allo. I had previously just assumed both would be equally difficult. But, like I said, sorry to offend. On the other hand, I liked the responses, quite funny.
 
With such large applicant pools, it would be pretty easy to find statistical differences between the populations. I would, however, be interested to see the magnitude of the difference in 5-10 years.
 
I agree that the gap is closing.

Every year the statistics go up, so I wouldnt be surprised to see ~30 as the avg MCAT score for some DO schools in a few years.

That initially made me think that there were 82,740 people for 4,389 seats; now THAT would be competitive!

And what's the point of going to med school at 71? To retire after residency? Talk about non-traditional. 😀 Props to him/her, though. 👍
 
I just want it to be known that I was REJECTED from AZCOM...but accepted at Penn State.
DO schools (and all med schools, really) are looking for a certain type of applicant. How well you fit that bill dictates your likelihood of acceptance vs. rejection.
For the record, all schools want students who can make the cut on the paper (MCAT, GPA). Once they know you are academically qualified, they consider your character (via Personal Statement, Secondary App, and ECs).
The interview is vital though, for both parties. That is when you really know whether or not you'd be a good fit at their school.
