Another question, what MCAT score on your first attempt should you consider that medical school is not for you?
You should ideally have only one attempt.
Do not take it until you are likely to get a score that gets you in somewhere.

A first strong attempt is ideal, but if you score, say, a 20, it doesn't mean medicine isn't for you, just that you need to evaluate your test prep and studying. Something went wrong. After 1 bad attempt you shouldn't just throw in the towel and walk away. Unless it was really really really really really bad. Like equivalent to a single digit total.

You should be able to figure it out from the practice tests. If you have access to the old AMCAS practice tests, that's a good place to start in deciding whether medical school is within reach.

Average matriculant GPA for DO schools is 26; for MD schools, it is 30-31.

I wasn't asking about numbers(score). I was talking about applying in September/October which would probably be a big mistake.

Going DO seems like a more realistic option for me. Almost all DO schools, with the exception of 1 or 2, have the deadline set to after January 2016. (This means they could see your Fall 2015 semester grades, right?)

I am planning to take a gap year, but I am still taking the MCAT this Summer regardless. So if I get my score back in September and its a 35+ (old MCAT scale), I would probably just apply right then as there would be at least a few schools who'd give me a chance.

I am aware that my GPA is on the lower end, but I'm just keeping my options open right now.
